Introduction: Vitamin D's precise role in bone mineral density regulation remains elusive. Nevertheless, its deficiency is linked to increased bone turnover through the upregulation of RANK ligands by osteoblasts. This study aimed to (i) evaluate vitamin D status in young adults and (ii) assess the association between vitamin D deficiency and bone turnover markers receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), RANK, and the osteoprotegerin (OPG) in determining bone mineral density.

The study revealed the presence of rich chemical and biochemical composition in and antioxidant activities. Moreover, the plant extracts demonstrated significant DNA damage prevention activity against UV/HO-induced oxidative damage.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAbernathy malformations are congenital extrahepatic porto-systemic shunts which allow splanchnic circulation to bypass the metabolic screen of the liver and drain directly into the systemic circulation. The resulting metabolic abnormalities have a multitude of implications ranging from hyperammonaemia, hepatic encephalopathy, to pulmonary hypoxemia. The shunt also causes anatomical implications in the form of varices.

Methods: The study included 36 patients of TA.
Context: The primary goal of septic shock management is optimization of organ perfusion, often at the risk of overloading the interstitium and causing pulmonary edema. The conventionally used end points of resuscitation do not generally include volumetric parameters such as extravascular lung water index (EVLWI) and pulmonary vascular permeability index (PVPI).
Aims: This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of EVLWI and PVPI by calculating their correlation with the severity of lung injury.
The incidence of bronchoesophageal fistula in presence of benign pathology of tracheal tree or oesophagus is rare. It is encountered in thoracic diseases like tuberculosis, syphilis or histoplasmosis due to erosion by infected lymph node or abscess to adjoining structures. The source of primary pathology has to be eliminated followed by appropriate steps of fistula tract closure is essential for optimal result.

The management approach is complex and requires a multidisciplinary team. We report a case of locally advanced Askin's tumour in a child because of its rarity and also to highlight the importance of keeping the possibility of PNET tumours in mind while dealing with cases of chest wall tumour in children.

Materials And Methods: We describe three patients with malignant airway strictures, treated entirely via transnasal route under local anesthesia using bronchoscopic and fluoroscopic guidance. Nasal route allowed convenient access to the airway for the bronchoscope across the stricture and a guidewire was introduced through its working channel.
Background: The NE region of India falls in the global hotspot of biodiversity. Wild edible plants (WEPs) are widely consumed in the daily diet of the local people. WEPs are critical for the sustenance of ethnic communities and also as a source of income.

Ultrasound offers a rapid, safe, and noninvasive approach to the diagnosis of intestinal ascariasis. Ultrasound is also the modality of choice for diagnosis of hepatobiliary ascariasis, which is relatively rare and is due to migration of intestinal worms through the papilla of Vater.

It is phenotypically heterogeneous, usually a sporadic or autosomal dominant disorder resulting from a mutation in the CHD7 (chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein) gene.

Clinical evaluation of such patient may present several months or even years after the initial injury and clinician may fail to elicit an antecedent skin puncture. X-ray examination will miss radiolucent foreign bodies.

Field drought is a slow mechanism and the plants go through an adaptive process in contrast to the drastic changes of rapid dehydration in case of controlled experiments. We identified a set of drought responsive genes under controlled condition using SSH, and validated the identified genes and their pattern of expression under field drought condition.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA cDNA-AFLP approach was used to identify transcript and/or genes specifically expressed in response to drought in tea. Drought was artificially induced and whole genome transcript profiling was done at three different stages-6 days before wilting, 3 days before wilting and at wilting stage of both tolerant and susceptible cultivars, and genetic differences was thus visualized as polymorphisms in the transcriptome. The cDNA-AFLP technique allowed genes and transcripts to be identified in the tolerant genotype (TV-23) whose expression is responsive to drought stress.

There are isolated case reports of the involvement of choroid plexus in tuberculous meningitis. The main imaging findings are abnormal enhancement of the thickened choroid plexus, asymmetric hydrocephalus with sequestrated temporal horn, periventricular edema and intraventricular septae formation.

Methods: In 24 patients with ICH (putaminal 22 and thalamic 2) features of raised intracranial pressure (ICP), such as hyperventilation, extensor rigidity, pupillary asymmetry and pyramidal signs on the non-hemiplegic side, were recorded. Depth of coma was assessed by using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and severity of stroke by using the Canadian Neurological Scale (CNS).
Spontaneous regression of cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is rare and poorly understood phenomenon. We present a case of spontaneous complete and asymptomatic occlusion of the AVM associated with thrombosis of the draining cortical vein. The thrombosed draining cortical vein is beautifully demonstrated on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Cadmium at 200 mg kg-1 soil and above concentrations was fatal as growth was inhibited ultimately leading to death of Java citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt.). The surviving plants at 50 and 100 mg kg-1 treatments also exhibited pronounced retardation of growth and biomass yield.
