In structures with special geometry lattices, variations in stacking sequences are ubiquitous, yielding many novel structures and functionalities. Despite a wealth of intriguing properties and wide-ranging applications, there remains a considerable gap in understanding the correlation between special geometry lattices and functionalities in borides. Here, we design and synthesize a new superconducting boride NbIrB, with a body-centered orthorhombic structure, consisting of alternating two-dimensional [Nb-Ir-Nb] triple-triangular-lattice-layers and B fragment layers.

Ferroelectric 2D van der Waals (vdW) layered materials are attracting increasing attention due to their potential applications in next-generation nanoelectronics and in-memory computing with polarization-dependent functionalities. Despite the critical role of polarization in governing ferroelectricity behaviors, its origin and relation with local structures in 2D vdW layered materials have not been fully elucidated so far. Here, intralayer sliding of approximately six degrees within each quadruple-layer of the prototype 2D vdW ferroelectrics InSe is directly observed and manipulated using sub-angstrom resolution imaging and in situ biasing in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope.

Electric field-induced second harmonic generation allows electrically controlling nonlinear light-matter interactions crucial for emerging integrated photonics applications. Despite its wide presence in materials, the figures-of-merit of electric field-induced second harmonic generation are yet to be elevated to enable novel device functionalities. Here, we show that the polar skyrmions, a topological phase spontaneously formed in PbTiO/SrTiO ferroelectric superlattices, exhibit a high comprehensive electric field-induced second harmonic generation performance.

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) are a special class of materials that utilize the concept of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with five or more elements randomly distributing at a single sublattice in near-equiatomic proportions. HEOs have been attracting increasing attention owing to their many outstanding physical and chemical properties. However, unlike HEAs, for which local chemical compositions, order/disorder behaviors, and property-structure relationships have been comprehensively investigated, detailed information on the atomic-scale chemical and structural features and their correlations with functionalities in HEOs so far is still not sufficient.

Article Synopsis
  • - Mg (Sb,Bi) is a promising thermoelectric material that operates near room temperature, but requires careful control of defects and microstructure to optimize its performance.
  • - Previous research identified that magnesium vacancies negatively impact the material's efficiency, and this study suggests that reducing bismuth can help mitigate these effects by altering the way electrons and phonons scatter.
  • - The optimized Mg (Sb,Bi) composition achieved notable thermoelectric performance with a peak zT of 1.82 at 773 K and an efficiency of 11.3% at a temperature difference of 473 K, showcasing a practical method to enhance its capabilities.

The lunar soils evolution over time is mainly caused by space weathering that includes the impacts of varying-sized meteoroids and charged particles implantation of solar/cosmic winds as well. It has long been established that space weathering leads to the formation of outmost amorphous layers (50-200 nm in thickness) embedded nanophase iron (npFe) around the mineral fragments, albeit the origin of the npFe remains controversial . The Chang'e-5 (CE-5) mission returned samples feature the youngest mare basalt and the highest latitude sampling site , providing an opportunity to seek the critical clues for understanding the evolution of soils under space weathering.

Hyperglycemia-induced apoptosis plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Our previous study demonstrated that ivabradine, a selective I current antagonist, significantly attenuated myocardial apoptosis in diabetic mice, but the underlying mechanisms remained unknown. This study investigated the underlying mechanisms by which ivabradine exerts anti-apoptotic effects in experimental DCM.
