Effects of age and hearing loss on speech emotion discrimination.

Better communication with older people requires not only improving speech intelligibility but also understanding how well emotions can be conveyed and the effect of age and hearing loss (HL) on emotion perception. In this paper, emotion discrimination experiments were conducted using a vocal morphing method and an HL simulator in young normal hearing (YNH) and older participants. Speech sounds were morphed to represent intermediate emotions between all combinations of happiness, sadness, and anger.

Increased vitamin D intake may reduce psychological anxiety and the incidence of menstrual irregularities in female athletes.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with major depression and premenstrual mood symptoms, and menstrual irregularity has been correlated with mental anxiety. However, the potential effect of increased vitamin D intake on reducing the risk of menstrual irregularities by decreasing psychological anxiety is yet to be fully elucidated. The existence of such a relationship in athletes with high levels of psychological anxiety and adequate dietary intake remains unknown.

Subacute thyroiditis in a patient with psoriatic arthritis switched from secukinumab to adalimumab: a case report and literature review.

A 71-year-old Japanese female with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) was admitted for fever and neck pain. Her medication had been switched from secukinumab, an interleukin (IL)-17A inhibitor, to adalimumab, a tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitor, due to secondary failure for PsA. She was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) on the basis of thyroid hormone levels and thyroid ultrasound findings.

Exploration of flow reaction conditions using machine-learning for enantioselective organocatalyzed Rauhut-Currier and [3+2] annulation sequence.

A highly atom-economical enantioselective organocatalyzed Rauhut-Currier and [3+2] annulation sequence has been established by using a flow system. Suitable flow conditions were explored through reaction screening of multiple parameters using machine learning. Eventually, functionalized chiral spirooxindole analogues were obtained in high yield with good ee as a single diastereomer within one minute.

In vitro production of cysteine from glucose.

Cysteine is a commercially valuable amino acid with an increasing demand in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Although cysteine is conventionally manufactured by extraction from animal proteins, this method has several problems, such as troublesome waste-water treatment and incompatibility with some dietary restrictions. Fermentative production of cysteine from plant-derived substrates is a promising alternative for the industrial production of cysteine.

Rhenium- and manganese-catalyzed synthesis of aromatic compounds from 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and alkynes.

We have succeeded in the development of three approaches to the synthesis of aromatic compounds from 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and alkynes. The first approach is a manganese-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition between 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, which have no substituents at the active methylene moiety, and terminal alkynes. This reaction proceeds with high regioselectivity when aryl acetylenes are employed as the alkyne component.

An in vitro chemosensitivity test for gastric cancer using collagen gel droplet embedded culture.

Collagen gel droplet embedded culture drug sensitivity test (CD-DST) was applied to 33 patients with gastric cancer (30 primary tumors, 12 metastatic tumors and 25 biopsy specimens). Evaluable rates by CD-DST were 80% for primary tumors, 75% for metastatic tumors and 72% for biopsy specimens. Chemosensitivities of primary tumors were: 5-fluorouracil 25%, mitomycin C 17%, cisplatin 13%, adriamycin 17%, etoposide 21%.

[Effect of preventive measures against central venous catheter-related infection: retrospective study in our division for recent 10 years].

A study was made of 2202 central venous catheters (CVC), which were inserted for recent 10 years, to know the effect of preventive measures against CVC-related infection. We divided 10 years in 3 periods: 1987-1990 (the first period), 1991-1993 (the second period), and 1994-1996 (the third period). Preventive measures such as thorough antiseptic precaution, shortening of CVC dwelling time, and prohibition of injection from three-way stopcocks were taken after the second period.

An in vitro chemosensitivity test for solid human tumors using collagen gel droplet embedded cultures.

In vitro chemosensitivity testing using a collagen gel droplet embedded culture drug sensitivity test (CD-DST), was conducted with several types of solid cancer. The overall evaluable rate was 80% (443/554), including 76% for lung (n=243), 78% for breast (n=110), 87% for gastric (n=62), 83% for colorectal (n=107) cancers and 88% for 32 metastatic brain tumors. The in vitro sensitivity of breast, gastric and colorectal cancers to mitomycin C (MMC), cisplatin (CDDP), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and doxorubicin (DXR) was similar to the efficacy rates reported for each drug.

[The indications for postoperative adjuvant therapy in node-negative breast cancer patients].

A clinicopathological study on prognosis has been carried out in 233 breast cancer patients with more than twenty inspected nodes and without lymph node metastasis. Multivariate analysis of clinicopathological findings in node-negative breast cancers showed that the best combination of clinical features predicting prognosis were age, menstruation status, tumor location and tumor diameter; and from 11 pathological features, three factors (histological type, histological grade and the grade of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes) were selected under condition of p<0.05.

[Parathyroid crisis].

Parathyroid crisis is an unusual form of primary hyperparathyroidism characterized by life-threatening hypercalcemia. We encountered nine patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, who showed various clinical symptoms including psychoneurotic symptoms, as a result of marked hypercalcemia. The average age of the patients was 49 (29 to 77), with an even distribution between men and women.

[Clinical study on postoperative infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus after gastrointestinal surgery].

We studied 308 postoperative infections (216 patients) after gastrointestinal surgery during 1987-1991, to elucidate the incidence of postoperative infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and its correlation to clinical background factors. We made an investigation on central venous catheter related sepsis (CRS) in recent 5 years (1987-1991). The incidence of CRS was high; 16.0% (125 out of 782 cases) or 13.

[A case of adenoma of the nipple with breast cancer].

Adenoma of the nipple is an uncommon lesion which can be mistaken clinically for Paget's disease and pathologically be misinterpreted as an adenocarcinoma. We recently experienced a case of very rare adenoma of the left nipple with left breast cancer. The patient was a 42-year-old, married woman with a firm, partially erosive lump measuring 12 X 12mm in her left nipple and with a left breast lump.

[A clinicopathological study on carcinoembryonic antigen in breast cancer].

The production of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) by human breast cancer tissue has been studied in relation to the prognosis of 60 patients with breast cancer who were classified in Clinical Stage of UICC I, II and III, and who were treated by radical mastectomy. Tissue CEA was studied in primary tumors using an immunoperoxidase (PAP) method. The obtained results were as followings: 1) Patients who had CEA-negative tumors had significantly higher 10-year survival rates.

[A case of stromal sarcoma of the breast].

A 28-year-old woman with a stromal sarcoma of the breast is reported. By palpation, she had uncovered a tumor in the upper inner quadrant of the right breast. The subsequent physical examination and echographic findings suggested a phyllodes tumor and an excisional biopsy was performed.
