Painless recurrent orbital wall infarction secondary to sickle cell disease: A case report.

Purpose: Describe the various presentations of the rare entity of orbital wall infarction secondary to sickle cell disease and highlight the importance of magnetic resonance imaging in differentiating the entity from other similar diagnoses.

Observation: A 4-year-old child presented to the hospital with bilateral recurrent painless orbital wall infarction secondary to sickle cell disease. Orbital wall infarctions have been described before in the literature; However, the painless and recurrent nature is intriguing.

Objective: Oculoplastic surgery is a highly specialized subspecialty that studies pathologies of the orbit, lacrimal system, and eyelids. Although it is an independent ophthalmological subspecialty, many procedures fall within the shared scope and anatomical area of oculoplastic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery, which tend to confuse physicians and patients seeking medical advice. In this study, our goal is to evaluate the perception of oculoplastic surgery among the public and physicians.

Psychiatry chief residents have diverse leadership roles within psychiatry residency programs. Chief residents have historically been viewed as "middle managers", and other leadership roles include administrative work, teaching, and advocacy for residents. Chief residents also help in managing the logistics of complex healthcare systems and mediating between many groups with conflicting needs and perspectives.

The Effectiveness of Ketamine Versus Opioids in Patients With Acute Pain in the Emergency Department: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Opioids are the mainstay of treatment for acute pain in the emergency department. However, its misuse led to the investigation of alternative effective analgesic options for acute pain complaints such as ketamine. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the effectiveness of ketamine in comparison to opioids in the management of acute pain.

Prenatal auditory stimulation induces physiological stress responses in developing embryos and newly hatched chicks.

Prenatal stress may evoke considerable physiological consequences on the developing poultry embryos and neonates. The present study aimed to determine prenatal auditory stimulation effects on serum levels of ceruloplasmin (CPN), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), corticosterone (CORT), and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) regulations in developing chicken embryos and newly hatched chicks. Hatching eggs were subjected to the following auditory treatments; 1) control (no additional sound treatment other than the background sound of the incubator's compressors at 40 dB), 2) noise exposure (eggs were exposed to pre-recorded traffic noise at 90 dB) (NOISE), and 3) music exposure (eggs were exposed to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K 488 at 90 dB) (MUSIC).

Towards Investigating the Effect of Ammonium Nitrate on the Characteristics and Thermal Decomposition Behavior of Energetic Double Base NC/DEGDN Composite.

This research work aimed to elaborate on a new modified double-base propellant containing nitrocellulose (NC), ammonium nitrate (AN), and diethylene glycol dinitrate (DEGDN). The developed AN/NC-DEGDN formulation was successfully obtained through a casting process and fully characterized in terms of its chemical structure, morphological features, and thermal behavior. The present research aims to select the optimal molar ratio of hydrazine 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (HNTO) and ammonium nitrate (AN) to produce an energetic co-crystal. For a comparison purpose, the heat release, cost, density and hygroscopicity of the different co-crystals were evaluated. The obtained results indicated that HNTO/AN at the 1 : 3 ratio exhibited a higher heat release, better thermal stability, low water content and a reasonable cost, compared to other co-crystals.

PsychEd is an educational, publicly available podcast targeting junior learners in psychiatry. This study characterized PsychEd's listeners and the podcast's role in their education.

Testing the Sensitivity of Conjunctival Swabs from Confirmed COVID-19 Patients.

Objective: To investigate the incidence of COVID-19 viral RNA in the conjunctiva of patients priorly confirmed to have COVID-19, using a conjunctival swab and to determine swab sensitivity.

Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled patients who tested positive for COVID-19 with PCR via nasopharyngeal swabs. Conjunctival swabs were collected for each patient and subjected to RT-PCR assay.

Identification of Resistance Sources and Genome-Wide Association Mapping of Septoria Tritici Blotch Resistance in Spring Bread Wheat Germplasm of ICARDA.

Septoria tritici blotch (STB) of wheat, caused by the ascomycete (formerly ), is one of the most important foliar diseases of wheat. In Morocco, STB is a devastating disease in temperate wheat-growing regions, and the yield losses can exceed up to 50% under favorable conditions. The aims of this study were to identify sources of resistance to STB in Septoria Association Mapping Panel (SAMP), which is composed of 377 advanced breeding lines (ABLs) from spring bread wheat breeding program of ICARDA, and to identify loci associated with resistance to STB at seedling (SRT) as well as at the adult plant (APS) stages using genome-wide association mapping (GWAM).

Background: Beta-thalassemia is a genetic disorder that is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Beta-thalassemia major patients need a continuous blood transfusion and iron chelation to maintain the normal homeostasis of red blood cells (RBCs) and other systems in the body.

Rapid Targeted Next-Generation Sequencing Platform for Molecular Screening and Clinical Genotyping in Subjects with Hemoglobinopathies.

Hemoglobinopathies are among the most common autosomal-recessive disorders worldwide. A comprehensive next-generation sequencing (NGS) test would greatly facilitate screening and diagnosis of these disorders. MortalitY in caRdIAc surgery (MYRIAD): A randomizeD controlled trial of volatile anesthetics. Rationale and design.

Objective: There is initial evidence that the use of volatile anesthetics can reduce the postoperative release of cardiac troponin I, the need for inotropic support, and the number of patients requiring prolonged hospitalization following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Nevertheless, small randomized controlled trials have failed to demonstrate a survival advantage. Thus, whether volatile anesthetics improve the postoperative outcome of cardiac surgical patients remains uncertain.
