Article Synopsis
  • Small signalling peptides, derived from larger proteins, regulate various plant processes, particularly in development and defense against pathogens, but many of those in plant immunity are still undiscovered.
  • We created a research method using transcriptomics and proteomics to identify small secreted proteins (SSPs) in rice that respond to the rice blast fungus and its component, chitin, uncovering 236 SSPs and notably, the immune response peptide (IRP), a potential precursor involved in rice immunity.
  • Our findings indicate that IRP is triggered by bacterial and fungal signals, enhancing defense gene expression and MAPK activation, and highlight our pipeline's effectiveness for discovering SSPs relevant to plant immunity and other functions.

Background: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a fibro-inflammatory disease of the pancreas. Early diagnosis and intervention, before CP becomes established and irreversible, are essential to improve the long-term outcomes. The world's first diagnostic criteria for early CP were proposed in Japan in 2009, but their clinical utility remains elusive.

Recent works have shed light on the long-distance interorgan signaling by which hormone-like peptides precisely regulate physiological effects in a manner similar to phytohormones. Many such peptides have already been identified in the primary model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition, Arabidopsis genome reanalysis revealed over 7000 novel candidate small coding genes, some of which are likely to be associated with hormone-like peptides.

The inter-organelle transport of lipids must be regulated to ensure appropriate lipid composition of each organelle. In mammalian cells, ceramide synthesised in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is transported to the trans-Golgi regions, where ceramide is converted to sphingomyelin (SM) with the concomitant production of diacylglycerol. Ceramide transport protein (CERT) transports ceramide from the ER to the trans-Golgi regions at the ER-Golgi membrane contact sites (MCS).

Purpose: Occurrence of proteinuria could result in cessation of bevacizumab and ramucirumab treatments. Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors exert a renoprotective effect by countering proteinuria. However, the association between renoprotective effect of RAS inhibitors and blood pressure control is unclear.

Subtilase cytotoxin (SubAB) is a virulence factor produced by locus of enterocyte effacement-negative Shiga-toxigenic Escherichia coli strains. The toxin recognizes sialoglycans for entry and cleaves an endoplasmic reticulum chaperon, binding immunoglobulin protein, to cause cell death. However, no systematic screening has yet been performed to identify critical host factors.

The adoptive cell transfer (ACT) of T cells targeting mutated neoantigens can cause objective responses in varieties of metastatic cancers, but the development of new T cell-based treatments relies on accurate animal models. To investigate the therapeutic effect of targeting a neoantigen with ACT, we used T cells from pmel-1 T cell receptor-transgenic mice, known to recognize a WT peptide, gp100, and a mutated version of the peptide that has higher avidity. We gene-engineered B16 cells to express the WT or mutated gp100 epitopes and found that pmel-1-specific T cells targeting a neoantigen tumor target augmented recognition as measured by IFN-γ production.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydrogen peroxide (HO) acts as a crucial signaling molecule that activates transcriptional responses in Arabidopsis plants under various environmental stresses, although its specific role in these processes is still not fully understood.
  • Time-dependent transcriptome analysis reveals that HO application can induce interactions between stress responses, particularly highlighting connections between high light, heat, wounding stresses, and hormonal signals like abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA).
  • The study identifies 15 regulatory pairs of transcription factors (TFs) linked to the HO response, suggesting a complex transcriptional regulatory network that plays a significant role in managing the plant's response to both biotic and abiotic stresses.

Previously, we reported that coffee extract and its constituents, caffeic acid (CA) and p-coumaric acid, inhibit infection by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). In the present report, we identified another coffee-related compound, tannic acid (TA), which also inhibits HCV infection. We systematically evaluated which steps of the viral lifecycle were affected by CA and TA.

It has been reported that endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is of value in evaluating precise pancreatograms of the pancreatic duct (PD). Recently, institutions have tended to perform magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) for the diagnosis of PD due to post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP). In small pancreatic cancer (PC), including PC in situ (PCIS) which is undetectable on cross sectional images, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and MRCP serve important roles in detecting local irregular stenosis of the PD or small cystic lesions.
