Background: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a fibro-inflammatory disease of the pancreas. Early diagnosis and intervention, before CP becomes established and irreversible, are essential to improve the long-term outcomes. The world's first diagnostic criteria for early CP were proposed in Japan in 2009, but their clinical utility remains elusive.

Hormone-like peptides and small coding genes in plant stress signaling and development.

Recent works have shed light on the long-distance interorgan signaling by which hormone-like peptides precisely regulate physiological effects in a manner similar to phytohormones. Many such peptides have already been identified in the primary model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition, Arabidopsis genome reanalysis revealed over 7000 novel candidate small coding genes, some of which are likely to be associated with hormone-like peptides.

Ceramide transport protein (CERT) transports ceramide from the ER to the trans-Golgi regions at the ER-Golgi membrane contact sites (MCS).

Patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with low body mass index (BMI) have worse outcomes than obese patients, and this phenomenon is recognized as "obesity paradox." Coronary calcification is associated with cardiac events. However, the association between BMI and calcification and their involvement in the mortality of AMI patients remain unknown.

Subtilase cytotoxin (SubAB) is a virulence factor produced by locus of enterocyte effacement-negative Shiga-toxigenic Escherichia coli strains. The toxin recognizes sialoglycans for entry and cleaves an endoplasmic reticulum chaperon, binding immunoglobulin protein, to cause cell death. However, no systematic screening has yet been performed to identify critical host factors.

An effective mouse model for adoptive cancer immunotherapy targeting neoantigens.

The adoptive cell transfer (ACT) of T cells targeting mutated neoantigens can cause objective responses in varieties of metastatic cancers, but the development of new T cell-based treatments relies on accurate animal models. To investigate the therapeutic effect of targeting a neoantigen with ACT, we used T cells from pmel-1 T cell receptor-transgenic mice, known to recognize a WT peptide, gp100, and a mutated version of the peptide that has higher avidity. We gene-engineered B16 cells to express the WT or mutated gp100 epitopes and found that pmel-1-specific T cells targeting a neoantigen tumor target augmented recognition as measured by IFN-γ production.

Inhibition Mechanisms of Hepatitis C Virus Infection by Caffeic Acid and Tannic Acid.

Previously, we reported that coffee extract and its constituents, caffeic acid (CA) and p-coumaric acid, inhibit infection by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). In the present report, we identified another coffee-related compound, tannic acid (TA), which also inhibits HCV infection. We systematically evaluated which steps of the viral lifecycle were affected by CA and TA.

Patient preference for biologic treatments of psoriasis in Japan.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting skin which may also manifest in nails and joints. Several biologic treatments have been approved in Japan for psoriasis. Each biologic has a different profile for efficacy and safety, including different dosing regimens and co-payment considerations which may complicate treatment decisions made by patients and physicians during short consultations.

Meteorological effects on severe hemoptysis: A hospital-based observational study.

Background: Although some meteorological factor are likely to contribute to the onset of hemoptysis, few studies have investigated this issue, with none conducted in the Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the associations of meteorological factors with the occurrence of hemoptysis. Differences in the frequency of hemoptysis among several calendar variables were also assessed.

Recently, institutions have tended to perform magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) for the diagnosis of PD due to post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP). In small pancreatic cancer (PC), including PC in situ (PCIS) which is undetectable on cross sectional images, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and MRCP serve important roles in detecting local irregular stenosis of the PD or small cystic lesions.

Risk factors for vancomycin nephrotoxicity and time course of renal function during vancomycin treatment.

Purpose: Vancomycin (VCM) is used for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Although the risk factors for VCM nephrotoxicity have been evaluated, the time course of renal function during VCM treatment is unknown. We assessed risk factors for VCM nephrotoxicity and how renal function varied over time.

Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are produced by various GSL-synthesizing enzymes, but post-translational regulation of these enzymes is incompletely understood. To address this knowledge disparity, we focused on biosynthesis of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), the Shiga toxin (STx) receptor, and performed a genome-wide CRISPR/CAS9 knockout screen in HeLa cells using STx1-mediated cytotoxicity. We identified various genes including sphingolipid-related genes and membrane-trafficking genes.

Original Homebuilt Off-the-Job Training System for Vascular Surgeons: System Analysis and Assessment.

: We assessed the effectiveness and appropriateness of our original off-the-job training (Off JT) system using data acquired from recruited medical students and doctors. : We presented our original homebuilt Off JT system, which is simple and inexpensive. In our unique system, we performed anastomosis at the bottom of a plastic pot, which mimics the actual open surgical procedure at a deep site.

Efficacy and safety of early cholecystectomy for comorbid acute cholecystitis and acute cholangitis: Retrospective cohort study.

Background: This study investigated the optimal timing and usefulness of early cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis in patients with comorbid acute cholangitis.

Materials And Methods: In 2011-2016, 252 patients who underwent early cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis and 7 who underwent delayed cholecystectomy were enrolled and compared. Patients with comorbid acute cholangitis were then divided into those who underwent urgent cholecystectomy (within 72 h after symptom onset), semi-urgent cholecystectomy (3-14 days after symptom onset), or delayed cholecystectomy (3 months after symptom onset).
