Article Synopsis
  • Excessive epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is linked to coronary artery disease (CAD), but its density and volume's relationship with CAD needs more investigation.
  • A study analyzed CT scans from 609 patients to measure EAT volume and density, assessing the correlation with coronary artery calcification (CAC), which is considered a sign of subclinical CAD.
  • Results indicated that higher EAT volume and lower density were significantly associated with the presence of CAC, suggesting that both the quality and quantity of EAT can predict subclinical CAD risks.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of excessive visceral adipose tissue (VAT) on subclinical coronary atherosclerosis and coronary artery calcifications (CAC) in young and middle-age groups using multislice computed tomography.

Methods: This study is a single center, cross-sectional study. Eligible patients (n = 159), who under the age of 61 years, with chest pain and mild to moderate probability to have coronary artery disease (CAD) were enrolled.
