Ferroptosis is regulated by signalling pathways that are associated with metabolism, including glutathione peroxidase 4 dysfunction, the cystine/glutamate antiporter system, lipid peroxidation and inadequate iron metabolism. Ferroptosis is associated with renal fibrosis; however, further research is required to understand the specific molecular mechanisms involved.
