We determined the effect of heat shock (HS) on the alterations of development and calcium releasing capacity of nuclear-ooplasmic reconstructed porcine oocytes stimulated by thimerosal. The non-HS (39 degrees C) and the HS2h (41.5 degrees C for 2 h) matured oocytes were enucleated and their spindles/chromosomes were exchanged between these two groups followed by parthenogenetic activation.

TRAIL induced a slight, but consistent, decrease in viability for both cell lines, and pharmacologic inhibition of proteasome activity, using Z-LLF-CHO (Z-LLF), synergistically enhanced TRAIL-induced loss of viability. This enhanced sensitization was associated with the up-regulation of a TRAIL receptor, DR5, and pro-apoptotic Bax.

The present studies were conducted to evaluate the potential for TRAIL to promote apoptotic cell death in differentiated granulosa cells collected from hen preovulatory follicles. While mRNA encoding critical components (including TRAIL) required for a functional extrinsic cell death pathway are expressed in granulosa cells, TRAIL treatment by itself fails to induce either caspase-3 activity or a decrease in cell viability.

Hens expressing the POF or PCOF syndrome had stopped laying for several weeks, but the ovary contained an increased number of mature-size and larger follicles (POF hens), which were cystic (PCOF) in some of the hens. Hens with the POF or PCOF syndrome had plasma progesterone (P(4)) concentrations that were relatively high and without surges.

Our objective was to document changes in concentrations of several reproductive hormones the several days before and after initial pubertal preovulatory surges of LH in turkey hens photostimulated with either constant (24L:0D) or diurnal (14L:10D) lighting. The hens were cannulated for hourly blood sampling, starting 10 days after photostimulation and continuing until all hens had laid at least two eggs.
