TGFβ signaling is known to drive metastasis in human cancer. Under physiologic conditions, the level of TGFβ activity is tightly controlled by a regulatory network involving multiple negative regulators. At metastasis, however, these inhibitory mechanisms are usually overridden so that oncogenic TGFβ signaling can be overactivated and sustained.

Intestinal inflammation causes initial axonal degeneration and neuronal death but subsequent axon outgrowth from surviving neurons restores innervation density to the target smooth muscle cells. Elsewhere, the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-1β cause neurotoxicity, leading us to test their role in promoting enteric neuron death. In a rat coculture model, TNFα or IL-1β did not affect neuron number but did promote significant neurite outgrowth to twofold that of control by 48 h, while other cytokines (e.

Phenotypic similarities have long been recognized between subpopulations of glioma and neural stem cells. Many of these similar properties, including the robust abilities to self-renew, migrate, and invade, are hallmarks of glioma cells that render them extremely aggressive. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this character, particularly in glioma stem-like cells that drive this disease, remain poorly understood.

The combination of the anisotropic Dy(III) ion and organic radicals as spin carriers results in discrete and one-dimensional lanthanide-radical magnetic materials, namely, [Dy(hfac)(3)(NITThienPh)(2)] (1) and [Dy(2)(hfac)(6)(NITThienPh)(2)](n) (2; hfac =hexafluoroacetylacetonate, NITThienPh = 2-(5-phenyl-2-thienyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide). Linking monomeric 1 with the Dy(III) ion leads to the formation of polymeric 2, and the transformation between them is chemically controllable and reversible. The characterization of both static and dynamic magnetic properties shows that the dominant intrachain exchange interaction is important to observe magnetic bistability in 2 rather than that in 1.

Four binuclear dysprosium compounds incorporating the radical ligand 2-(4-oxidopyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazolin-1-oxyl-3-oxide (PyNONIT) have been successfully synthesized under appropriate conditions. Centrosymmetric bimetallic Dy(2)O(2) cores in all of the compounds through double-μ(2)-oxygen atoms of the N-oxide groups are realized in a metal-radical approach for the first time. Dimers 1 and 2, of the same formula {[Dy(hfac)(3)(PyNONIT)](2)}(2) (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) but obtained by different methods, which contain almost identical local symmetry of D(4d) and Dy-(O)(2)-Dy bridging fashion, however, display no out-of-phase alternating-current (ac) signal for 1 and slow relaxation of the magnetization for 2 corresponding to the difference of the crystal packing mode.

It has been suggested that the mitochondrial chimeric gene orfH79 is the cause for abortion of microspores in Honglian cytoplasmic male sterile rice, yet little is known regarding its mechanism of action. In this study, we used a mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics strategy to compare the mitochondrial proteome between the sterile line Yuetai A and its fertile near-isogenic line Yuetai B. We discovered a reduced quantity of specific proteins in mitochondrial complexes in Yuetai A compared with Yuetai B, indicating a defect in mitochondrial complex assembly in the sterile line.

The associations among rhizobia chromosomal background, nodulation genes, legume plants, and geographical regions are very attractive but still unclear. To address this question, we analyzed the interactions among rhizobia rDNA genotypes, nodC genotypes, legume genera, as well as geographical regions in the present study. Complex relationships were observed among them, which may be the genuine nature of their associations.
