Background: Isopentenyltransferases (IPT) serve as crucial rate-limiting enzyme in cytokinin synthesis, playing a vital role in plant growth, development, and resistance to abiotic stress.

Results: Compared to the wild type, transgenic creeping bentgrass exhibited a slower growth rate, heightened drought tolerance, and improved shade tolerance attributed to delayed leaf senescence. Additionally, transgenic plants showed significant increases in antioxidant enzyme levels, chlorophyll content, and soluble sugars.

As a typical warm-season grass, bermudagrass growth and turf quality begin to decrease when the environmental temperature drops below 20 °C. The current study investigated the differential responses of three bermudagrass genotypes to chilling stress (8/4 °C) for 15 days and then freezing stress (2/-2 °C) for 2 days. The three genotypes exhibited significant variation in chilling and freezing tolerance, and Chuannong-3, common bermudagrass 001, and Tifdwarf were ranked as cold-tolerant, -intermediate, and -sensitive genotypes based on evaluations of chlorophyll content, the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, oxidative damage, and cell membrane stability, respectively.

Soil-reinforcement fibers are widely used for soil remediation and erosion prevention in ecologically vulnerable regions with sparse vegetation coverage and are incorporated into the soil for prolonged periods. However, the potential risks posed by aging fiber materials to soil health and plant growth have been largely neglected. This study explored the effects of aging solutions for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), coir, and carbon fibers on the physiological characteristics and vegetation coverage of ryegrass, as well as soil properties.

Aims: Increases in nitrogen (N) deposition may significantly affect the organic carbon (OC) cycle in soil. The inconsistent findings of the influence of added N on soil OC pools highlight the need of quantifying responses of the OC pool distribution to N addition. Moreover, the influence of N addition with a mixture of organic and inorganic N on OC pool distribution and stabilization in grassland soil remains unclear.

Beneficial effects of spermidine (Spd) on alleviating abiotic stress damage have been explored in plants for hundreds of years, but limited information is available about its roles in regulating lipids signaling and metabolism during heat stress. White clover () plants were pretreated with 70 μM Spd and then subjected to high temperature (38/33 °C) stress for 20 days. To further investigate the effect of Spd on heat tolerance, transgenic overexpressing a encoding a key enzyme involved in Spd biosynthesis was exposed to high temperature (38/33 °C) stress for 10 days.

Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a developmental process in which somatic cells undergo dedifferentiation to become plant stem cells, and redifferentiation to become a whole embryo. SE is a prerequisite for molecular breeding and is an excellent platform to study cell development in the majority of plant species. However, the molecular mechanism involved in somatic embryonic induction, embryonic and maturation is unclear.

Turfgrasses are an important vehicle for urban ecology and one of the most important indicators of economy and civilization. The biological characteristics of different turfgrass species affect the productivity and quality of the turf and its potential use in landscapes, slopes, and sports fields. Cultivation and management techniques can assist turfgrasses to meet the challenges of climate change, while the development of molecular breeding will provide a broader platform for the application of turfgrasses.

Article Synopsis
  • The NYC-like (NOL) enzyme is crucial for breaking down chlorophyll, specifically converting chlorophyll into 7-hydroxymethyl chlorophyll a, and its gene was found to be 981-bp long, coding for 326 amino acids.
  • ZjNOL is located in the chloroplast stroma and is linked with ZjNYC, showing increased expression during leaf senescence influenced by various plant hormones.
  • Ectopic expression of ZjNOL in creeping bentgrass led to yellow leaves, structural changes in chloroplasts, reduced photosynthesis, and overall poorer plant health, indicating significant effects on chlorophyll content and ion leakage.

The degradation of chlorophyll is of great significance to plant growth. The chlorophyll reductase NOL (NYC1-like) is in charge of catalyzing the degradation of chlorophyll and maintaining the stability of the photosystem. However, the molecular mechanisms of NOL-mediated chlorophyll degradation, senescence, and photosynthesis and its functions in other metabolic pathways remain unclear, especially in warm-season turfgrass.

Cool-season creeping bentgrass () has the ability to form fine sports turf, but high temperatures result in summer bentgrass decline (SBD), especially in transitional and subtropical zones. Physiological responses in combination with the alteration in turf quality (TQ) will contribute to a better understanding of SBD in a subtropical zone. Field experiments were conducted from 2017 to 2019 to test the adaptability to summer stress among four cultivars (13M, Penncross, Seaside II, and PA-1).

Due to increased global warming and climate change, drought has become a serious threat to horticultural crop cultivation and management. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of spermine (Spm) pretreatment on metabolic alterations of polyamine (PAs), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), proline (Pro), and nitrogen associated with drought tolerance in creeping bentgrass (). The results showed that drought tolerance of creeping bentgrass could be significantly improved by the Spm pretreatment, as demonstrated by the maintenance of less chlorophyll loss and higher photosynthesis, gas exchange, water use efficiency, and cell membrane stability.

is a warm-season turfgrass with a good tolerance and minimal maintenance requirements. However, its use in Northern China is limited due to massive chlorophyll loss in early fall, which is the main factor affecting its distribution and utilization. Although ethephon treatment at specific concentrations has reportedly improved stress tolerance and extended the green period in turfgrass, the potential mechanisms underlying this effect are not clear.
