It is usually difficult to achieve good outcomes with salvage treatment for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) because of its deep-seated location, surrounding critical structures, and patient history of high-dose irradiation. Cranioplasty to reconstruct a skull defect after a decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a common neurosurgical procedure. However, cranioplasty is associated with relatively high complication rates, with optimal timing from craniectomy to cranioplasty remaining a controversial matter. Recent studies demonstrated early cranioplasty with appropriate risk mitigation to be a viable option with many clinical advantages, propelling the advocacy for cranioplasty as soon as brain swelling resolves.

During a spinal cord injury (SCI), mechanical trauma rapidly leads to a blood-spinal cord barrier (BSB) disruption, neural cell damage, axonal damage, and demyelination, followed by a cascade of secondary inflammatory reactions. A 38-year-old woman had complex, congenital heart anomalies, including double-outlet right ventricle with mitral atresia, severe left ventricle hypoplasia, atrial septal defect, and severe pulmonary stenosis, for which she had not received appropriate treatment.
