Comparative study of BMP-2 alone and combined with VEGF carried by hydrogel for maxillary alveolar bone regeneration.

The effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) combined with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) for bone regeneration is still controversial as to whether or not VEGF has a synergistic or additive effect. This study attempted to evaluate the synergistic effect of VEGF and BMP-2 compared to BMP-2 alone for maxillary alveolar bone regeneration using collagen sponge/hydrogel complex sheets in a canine model. After mixing BMP-2 and VEGF with a hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel (HAH), the collagen sponge/hydrogel complex was transplanted into maxillary alveolar bone defects (n=14) after the extraction of canine upper first molars on both sides.

Virtual skeletal complex model- and landmark-guided orthognathic surgery system.

In this study, correction of the maxillofacial deformities was performed by repositioning bone segments to an appropriate location according to the preoperative planning in orthognathic surgery. The surgery was planned using the patient's virtual skeletal models fused with optically scanned three-dimensional dentition. The virtual maxillomandibular complex (MMC) model of the patient's final occlusal relationship was generated by fusion of the maxillary and mandibular models with scanned occlusion.

Plunging Ranulas Revisited: A CT Study with Emphasis on a Defect of the Mylohyoid Muscle as the Primary Route of Lesion Propagation.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to clarify the pathogenesis of plunging ranulas in regard of the pathway of lesion propagation using CT scans.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed CT scans of 41 patients with plunging ranula. We divided plunging ranulas into two types: type 1 was defined as those directly passing through a defect of the mylohyoid muscle with the presence (type 1A) or absence (type 1B) of the tail sign and type 2 as those through the traditional posterior route along the free edge of the mylohyoid muscle.

Postoperative relapse after mandibular setback surgery with perioperative counterclockwise rotation of the mandibular proximal segment.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate whether the perioperative counterclockwise rotation (CCWR) of the proximal segment (PS) can reduce relapse after mandibular setback surgery.

Study Design: Patients who underwent less than 1° of bilateral perioperative rotation of the PS were assigned to group I (n = 15). Group II (n = 14) included patients who showed greater than 1° of perioperative CCWR bilaterally.

Nuclear Factor Erythroid-2 Like 1 (NFE2L1): Structure, function and regulation.

Nrf1 (also referred to as NFE2L1) is a member of the CNC-bZIP family of transcription factors that are characterized by a highly conserved CNC-domain, and a basic-leucine zipper domain required for dimerization and DNA binding. Nrf1 is ubiquitously expressed across tissue and cell types as various isoforms, and is induced by stress signals from a broad spectrum of stimuli. Evidence indicates that Nrf1 plays an important role in regulating a range of cellular functions including oxidative stress response, differentiation, inflammatory response, metabolism, and maintaining proteostasis.

Transcription factor Sp1 prevents TRF2(ΔBΔM)-induced premature senescence in human diploid fibroblasts.

Telomere uncapping is thought to be the fundamental cause of replicative cellular senescence, but the cellular machineries mediating this process have not been fully understood. In the present study, we present the role of Sp1 transcription factor in the state of telomere uncapping using the TRF2(ΔBΔM)-induced senescence model in human diploid fibroblasts. We observed that the expression of Sp1 is down-regulated in the TRF2(ΔBΔM)-induced senescence, which was mediated by ATM and p38 MAPK.

Molecular and Functional Characterization of FLOWERING LOCUS T Homologs in Allium cepa.

Onion bulbing is an important agricultural trait affecting economic value and is regulated by flowering-related genes. FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT)-like gene function is crucial for the initiation of flowering in various plant species and also in asexual reproduction in tuber plants. By employing various computational analysis using RNA-Seq data, we identified eight FT-like genes (AcFT) encoding PEBP (phosphatidylethanolamine-binding protein) domains in Allium cepa.

Black Raspberry Extract Increased Circulating Endothelial Progenitor Cells and Improved Arterial Stiffness in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Administration of black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) is known to improve vascular endothelial function in patients at a high risk for cardiovascular (CV) disease. We investigated short-term effects of black raspberry on circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and arterial stiffness in patients with metabolic syndrome. Patients with metabolic syndrome (n = 51) were prospectively randomized into the black raspberry group (n = 26, 750 mg/day) and placebo group (n = 25) during the 12-week follow-up.

A Study on Subchronic Inhalation Toxicity of 1-Chloropropane.

This study was conducted to measure toxicity of 1-chloropropane (CAS No. : 540-54-5). According to the OECD Test Guideline 413 (Subchronic inhalation toxicity: 90-day study), SD rats were exposed to 0, 310, 1,250, and 5,000 ppm of 1-chloropropane for 6 h/day, 5 day/week for 13 weeks via whole-body inhalation.

Retrospective study on factors affecting the prognosis in oral cancer patients who underwent surgical treatment only.

Background: This study was performed to evaluate their 5-year survival rates and identify the factors affecting the prognosis of oral cancer patients who had undergone surgical treatment only.

Methods: Among 130 patients who were diagnosed with malignant tumor of oral, maxillofacial, and surgical treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Chonnam National University Hospital within a period from January 2000 to December 2010, for 11 years, 84 patients were investigated who were followed up for more than 5 years after radical surgery; oral cancer is primary and received only surgical treatment. The survival rate according to gender, age, type and site of cancer, TNM stage, cervical lymph node metastasis and its stage, recurrence or metastasis, time of recurrence and metastasis, and differentiation were investigated and analyzed.

A Case of Influenza Associated Fulminant Myocarditis Successfully Treated with Intravenous Peramivir.

We report the case of a patient with fulminant myocarditis caused by influenza A virus, who presented with acute-onset heart failure and cardiogenic shock and was treated successfully with single dose of intravenous peramivir and with pharmacologic hemodynamic support. A 45-year-old Korean woman presented to our emergency department (ED) with shortness of breath and an episode of seizure that developed abruptly 5 hours before she arrived in the ED. She had a history of recurrent epileptic seizure 25 years ago, but denied other specific medical illnesses.

Effects of Rubus occidentalis extract on blood pressure in patients with prehypertension: Randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel has been used as a carrier of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP)-2 for sustained delivery. To enhance peri-implant osteogenesis, a dried coating of rhBMP-2 HA hydrogel (BMP-HAH) on dental implants was designed; this approach provides the advantage of omitting in situ preparation of wet HA hydrogel. Sustained release of rhBMP-2 was more efficient for dried hydrogel over wet hydrogel.

Initial and recurrent stroke produces central nervous system (CNS) damage, involving neuroinflammation. Receptor-mediated S1P signaling can influence neuroinflammation and has been implicated in cerebral ischemia through effects on the immune system. Endotracheal intubation using i-gel® and lightwand in a patient with difficult airway: a case report.

This case report involves tracheal intubation using i-gel® in combination with a lightwand in a patient with a difficult airway, classified as Cormack-Lehane grade 3. I-gel® was used during anesthesia induction to properly maintain ventilation. The authors have previously reported successful tracheal intubation on a patient with a difficult airway through the use of i-gel® and a fiberoptic bronchoscope.
