Hyperuricemia has become a significant public-health concern in recent years, and the available treatments have been reported to have an adverse side effect on patients. has been used traditionally in Malaysia for treating gout, inflammation, and wounds. However, the plant has not been investigated for its effects on hyperuricemia.

Hyperuricemia is defined as a metabolic abnormality that occurs when serum uric acid (UA) level is abnormally high in the body. We previously reported that possesses various important phytochemicals and xanthine oxidase activity. Despite ethnomedicinal benefits, its toxicity and anti-hyperuricemic effects have not been reported.

Four different tests showed the effectiveness of Azolla pinnata plant extracts against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. In the adulticidal test, there was a significant increase in mortality as test concentration increases and A. pinnata extracts showed LC and LC values of 2572.

In this study, an efficient micropropagation protocol was developed for and the antioxidant properties of field-grown plant, in vitroderived greenhouse-grown plant and in vitro-derived callus extracts were compared. The seeds tested using tetrazolium chloride salt exhibited 89% viability. Due to poor germination capacity of seeds, the seeds were treated with gibberellic acid (GA) or sulfuric acid (HSO).

, locally known as 'Keladi Candik', has been used traditionally to treat wounds, furuncle and joint inflammations. can be a new source of herbal medicine against hyperuricemia by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase enzyme, the enzyme which is responsible for the development of hyperuricemia in human. Existing xanthine oxidase inhibitors (XOI drugs) show several side effects on gout patients.

Introduction: Direct contact with patients for medical education is essential in healthcare professional training. Patients who were recruited for a medical education home visit program in Malaysia did so on a voluntary basis without remuneration. This paper aims to explore their reasons for participation in this program.

Objective: To examine impressions of public healthcare providers/professionals (PHCPs) who are working closely with family medicine specialists (FMSs) at public health clinics.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Setting: This study is part of a larger national study on the perception of Malaysian public healthcare professionals on FMSs (PERMFAMS).

Perception of healthcare providers who worked with family medicine specialists (FMSs) could translate into the effectiveness of primary healthcare delivery in daily practices. This study examined perceptions of public healthcare providers/professionals (PHCPs) on FMSs at public health clinics throughout Malaysia. This was a cross-sectional study in 2012-2013 using postal method targeting PHCPs from three categories of health facilities, namely health clinics, health offices and hospitals.

Biomonitoring of multi-element atmospheric deposition using terrestrial moss is a well-established technique in Europe. Although the technique is widely known, there were very limited records of using this technique to study atmospheric air pollution in Malaysia. In this present study, the deposition of 11 trace metals surrounding the main petroleum refinery plant in Kerteh Terengganu (eastern part of peninsular Malaysia) has been evaluated using two local moss species, namely Hypnum plumaeforme and Taxithelium instratum as bioindicators.

Multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was developed for differential detection of Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar, and Entamoeba moshkovskii. Specific primers were designed for all three species, and then differentiation of E. histolytica and E.

Background: Optimum management of dyspepsia in primary care is a debatable subject. Testing for Helicobacter pylori (HP) has been recommended in primary care as this strategy will cure most underlying peptic ulcer disease and prevent future gastro duodenal disease.

Methods: A total of 98 patients completed Modified Glasgow Dyspepsia Severity Score Questionnaire (MGDSSQ) at initial presentation before undergoing the 13Carbon Urea Breath Test (UBT) for HP.

A total of 1,600 specimens, consisting of 16 different species of marine fish, were dissected and examined for anisakid larvae and adults in visceral organs, abdominal cavity, and muscles. One species of adult-stage nematode was found in two of 16 species of marine fish studied, Johnius carouna and Dendrophysa russelli. No anisakid larvae (third-stage) was found in any of the 16 species of marine fish studied.

The combination of mirtazapine and venlafaxine has been suggested as a treatment option for difficult to treat depressive illness. We describe 32 patients with persistent depressive illness (44% male; mean age 42 years; mean 2.5 previous antidepressant trials) that received mirtazapine and venlafaxine in combination at some point over the 3 year period between 2002 and 2005.

A single-round PCR assay was developed for detection and differential diagnosis of the three Entamoeba species found in humans, Entamoeba moshkovskii, Entamoeba histolytica, and Entamoeba dispar, that are morphologically identical as both cysts and trophozoites. A conserved forward primer was derived from the middle of the small-subunit rRNA gene, and reverse primers were designed from signature sequences specific to each of these three Entamoeba species. PCR generates a 166-bp product with E.

The practical use of lactate electrochemical analysers in exercise testing has not been adequately examined. Initial studies have reported differences in lactate concentration between that measured spectrophotometrically and that measured electrochemically. The study described here was undertaken to compare, using the statistical technique of Bland and Altman (1986), two widely available methods of measuring lactate using lysed and non-lysed blood samples and the lactate thresholds derived from the measured lactate values using a log-log transform technique.
