Plants modified to express insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (referred to as Bt-protected plants) provide a safe and highly effective method of insect control. Bt-protected corn, cotton, and potato were introduced into the United States in 1995/1996 and grown on a total of approximately 10 million acres in 1997, 20 million acres in 1998, and 29 million acres globally in 1999. The extremely rapid adoption of these Bt-protected crops demonstrates the outstanding grower satisfaction of the performance and value of these products.

Glyphosate-tolerant (Roundup Ready) corn line GA21 has been developed by genetic modification to tolerate glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compositional and nutritional safety of corn line GA21 compared to that of conventional corn. Compositional analyses were conducted to measure proximate, fiber, amino acid, fatty acid, and mineral contents of grain and proximate, fiber, and mineral contents of forage collected from 16 field sites over two growing seasons.

The associations between the intake of the fat-substitute olestra and the concentrations of macular carotenoid pigments and serum lutein and zeaxanthin were investigated in a volunteer cross-sectional sample in Indianapolis. The study was conducted in January through March, 1998 after olestra-containing savory snacks had been sold in central Indiana for a year. Volunteers (n = 280) aged 18-50 y were recruited to make a single clinic visit during which macular pigment optical density (MPOD) was determined by psychophysical flicker photometry, serum was obtained for determination of lutein and zeaxanthin concentration, usual intake of olestra, carotenoids and nutrients were assessed by 1-y food frequency questionnaire, and health habits including smoking, physical characteristics such as eye color, demographics and medical history were determined by questionnaire.

Purpose: Although previous data suggest that rod-mediated sensitivity decreases with age, this decrease may be insignificant when only healthy individuals younger than 65 years are considered. In this study, we assess the relationship between age and scotopic sensitivity loss in subjects younger than 65 years to determine whether scotopic sensitivity losses can be detected when confounding factors are considered (including iris color, smoking status, and dietary patterns) and a large sample size is used.

The cross-linking model for insulin receptor interactions, in which a single insulin molecule may form a cross-link between an insulin receptor's alpha-subunits, has been expressed as a formal compartmental model and subjected to a systematic analysis, examining a number of predictions that have been made for this model. The kinetic parameters for the model were obtained by matching data from insulin receptor equilibrium binding studies and rates of formation of the insulin receptor complex. This analytical study has allowed a clear description of the kinetics of the ligand receptor complexes involved in such a mechanism.

Animal feeding studies were conducted with rats, broiler chickens, catfish and dairy cows as part of a safety assessment program for a soybean variety genetically modified to tolerate in-season application of glyphosate. These studies were designed to compare the feeding value (wholesomeness) of two lines of glyphosate-tolerant soybeans (GTS) to the feeding value of the parental cultivar from which they were derived. Processed GTS meal was incorporated into the diets at the same concentrations as used commercially; diary cows were fed 10 g/100 g cracked soybeans in the diet, a level that is on the high end of what is normally fed commercially.
