Moderating the pool of active ribosomal subunits is critical for maintaining global translation rates. A factor crucial for modulating the 60S ribosomal subunit is eukaryotic translation initiation factor-6 (eIF6). Release of eIF6 from the 60S subunit is essential to permit 60S interactions with the 40S subunit.

Leptomeningeal metastasis/leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LMC; terms used interchangeably) is an inflammatory complication of primary tumors that involves the spread of the disease to the meninges (specifically the arachnoid and pia maters) and spinal cord. In the United States, approximately 110,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, and the prognosis is usually poor. Complications of LMC include cognitive impairment, cranial nerve dysfunction, ischemic stroke, and mortality.

Introduction: A growing number of Americans search online for health information related to urologic oncologic care each year. The American Medical Association recommends that medical information be written at a maximum sixth-grade level in order to be comprehensible by the majority of patients. As such, it is important to assess the quality and readability of online patient education material that patients are being exposed to.

Zinner syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by a triad of renal dysgenesis/agenesis, cysts in the ipsilateral seminal vesicle, and ejaculatory duct obstruction. Though often diagnosed in infancy, the diagnoses can be incidentally found in adults who present with nonspecific genitourinary symptoms including dysuria, ejaculatory dysfunction, or genital pain. We present an unusual case of a 29-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department with recurrent testicular pain and hematospermia and was found to have an atrophic right kidney with an ectopic ureter implanting into a cystic seminal vesicle.

Purpose: The current standard of care for muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by radical cystectomy (RC). Previous research has shown under-utilization of NAC for treatment of MIBC, especially among the elderly. Our aim was to stratify NAC use by decade of life and analyze trends in use over time along with recording pathologic downstaging and perioperative outcomes.

Background: Australia, like many high-income countries, is experiencing a resurgence of infectious syphilis in pregnancy and congenital syphilis. Evaluations of public health notifications and clinical records suggest that healthcare systems may not be providing optimal care to women and their neonates. This study aims to explore the barriers to optimal management of syphilis in pregnancy and congenital syphilis to identify key areas for improvement.

Purpose: Immunotherapy (IO) has significantly improved outcomes in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Preclinical evidence suggests that responses to IO may be potentiated via immunomodulatory effects of stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT). We hypothesized that clinical outcomes from the National Cancer Database (NCDB) would demonstrate improved overall survival (OS) in patients with mRCC receiving IO + SRT versus IO alone.

Octogenarians undergoing cystectomy experience higher morbidity and mortality compared to younger patients. Though the non-inferiority of robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) compared to open radical cystectomy (ORC) has been established in a generalized population, the benefits of the robotic approach have not been well studied in an aged population. The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried for all patients who underwent cystectomy for bladder cancer from 2010 to 2016.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates long-term outcomes and the timing of anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) treatments in young patients with very early onset inflammatory bowel disease (VEOIBD), specifically diagnosed under 6 years old.
  • A total of 89 VEOIBD patients were reviewed, with findings indicating that 39.5% initiated anti-TNF treatment, and the disease's severity significantly influenced the progression to treatment.
  • Notably, a higher response rate was observed in patients, potentially linked to increased infliximab dosing and shorter infusion intervals compared to standard practices.
