Patient stratification remains a challenge for optimal treatment of prostate cancer (PCa). This clinical heterogeneity implies intra-tumoural heterogeneity, with different prostate epithelial cell subtypes not all targeted by current treatments. We reported that such cell subtypes are traceable in liquid biopsies through representative transcripts.

Objective: Racial disparities in clinical communication quality are well-established but most clinical communication assessment tools are created without the collaboration of racially-diverse patient populations. Our objective was to collaborate with Black and White cancer survivors, caregivers, and advocates to develop and validate a tool to assess physicians' patient-centered communication.

Methods: A panel of Black and White cancer survivors, caregivers, and advocates (n = 11) and researchers observed and discussed video-recorded patient-physician cancer clinical interactions to generate and refine a list of physician communication behaviors considered critical for high-quality patient-centered communication.

Background: Leptin is an adipose tissue-derived hormone that plays a crucial role in body weight, appetite, and behaviour regulation. Leptin controls energy balance as an indicator of adiposity levels and as a modulator of the reward system, which is associated with liking palatable foods. Obesity is characterized by expanded adipose tissue mass and consequently, elevated concentrations of leptin in blood.

Article Synopsis
  • Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a serious condition linked to COVID-19, causing inflammation and affecting multiple organs.
  • Research indicates that while antibodies are produced, there are issues with cell-mediated immune responses, particularly with natural killer (NK) cells, which show reduced functionality.
  • Possible treatments, like using CD16 cellular engagers, may improve NK cell function and help address the immune system's dysregulation associated with MIS-C.

Objective: A cancer diagnosis during adolescence and young adulthood (AYA) disrupts AYAs' identity formation, a critical task for healthy development, and contributes to psychological distress called identity distress. Clinical communication is central to promoting AYAs' healthy identity development. We sought to identify aspects of clinician-diagnosed AYA communication that can promote AYAs' identity development and potentially buffer them from distress.

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a severe complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection characterized by multi-organ involvement and inflammation. Testing of cellular function ex vivo to understand the aberrant immune response in MIS-C is limited. Despite strong antibody production in MIS-C, SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid testing can remain positive for 4-6 weeks after infection.

Community-based health events provide an opportunity to increase knowledge, awareness, and screening for acute and chronic diseases among individuals living in a socioeconomically diverse community. Because there are limited reports of such events, here we describe our ten-year experience of annual men's health fairs. This retrospective study of the Michigan Institute of Urology Foundation evaluated Men's Health Events held in Detroit, Michigan, from 2012 to 2021.

The production of influenza vaccines in plants is achieved through transient expression of viral hemagglutinins (HAs), a process mediated by the bacterial vector Agrobacterium tumefaciens. HA proteins are then produced and matured through the secretory pathway of plant cells, before being trafficked to the plasma membrane where they induce formation of virus-like particles (VLPs). Production of VLPs unavoidably impacts plant cells, as do viral suppressors of RNA silencing (VSRs) that are co-expressed to increase recombinant protein yields.

The unfolded protein response (UPR) allows cells to cope with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress induced by accumulation of misfolded proteins in the ER. Due to its sensitivity to Agrobacterium tumefaciens, the model plant Nicotiana benthamiana is widely employed for transient expression of recombinant proteins of biopharmaceutical interest, including antibodies and virus surface proteins used for vaccine production. As such, study of the plant UPR is of practical significance, since enforced expression of complex secreted proteins often results in ER stress.

The androgen receptor (AR) plays a crucial role in the development and homeostasis of the prostate and is a key therapeutic target in prostate cancer (PCa). The gold standard therapy for advanced PCa is androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), which targets androgen production and AR signaling. However, resistance to ADT develops via AR-dependent and AR-independent mechanisms.

Background: Distinguishing between true indolent and potentially life-threatening prostate cancer is challenging in tumours displaying clinicopathologic features associated with low or intermediate risk of relapse. Several somatic DNA copy number alterations (CNAs) have been identified as potential prognostic biomarkers, but the standard cytogenetic method to assess them has a limited multiplexing capability.

Methods: Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) targeting 14 genes was optimised to survey 448 tumours of patients with low or intermediate risk (Grade Group 1-3, Gleason score ≤7) who underwent radical prostatectomy.

Hypothalamic detection of elevated circulating glucose triggers suppression of endogenous glucose production (EGP) to maintain glucose homeostasis. Antipsychotics alleviate symptoms associated with schizophrenia but also increase the risk for impaired glucose metabolism. In the current study, we examined whether two acutely administered antipsychotics from different drug classes, haloperidol (first generation antipsychotic) and olanzapine (second generation antipsychotic), affect the ability of intracerebroventricular (ICV) glucose infusion approximating postprandial levels to suppress EGP.

Prostate cancer (PCa) clinical heterogeneity underscores tumor heterogeneity, which may be best defined by cell subtypes. To test if cell subtypes contributing to progression can be assessed noninvasively, we investigated whether 14 genes representing luminal, neuroendocrine, and stem cells are detectable in whole blood RNA of patients with advanced PCa. For each gene, reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays were first validated using RNA from PCa cell lines, and their traceability in blood was assessed in cell spiking experiments.

Objectives: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to apply a novel software to measure and compare levels of nonverbal synchrony, as a potential indicator of communication quality, in video recordings of racially-concordant and racially-discordant oncology interactions. Predictions include that the levels of nonverbal synchrony will be greater during racially-concordant interactions than racially-discordant interactions, and that levels of nonverbal synchrony will be associated with traditional measures of communication quality in both racially-concordant and racially-discordant interactions.

Design: This is a secondary observational analysis of video-recorded oncology treatment discussions collected from 2 previous studies.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) have been associated with the expression of adaptive and maladaptive behavior elicited by fear-related and drug-associated cues. However, reported effects of mPFC manipulations on cue-elicited natural reward-seeking and inhibition thereof have been varied, with few studies examining cortico-striatal contributions in tasks that require adaptive responding to cues signaling reward and punishment within the same session. The current study aimed to better elucidate the role of mPFC and NAc subdivisions, and their functional connectivity in cue-elicited adaptive responding using a novel discriminative cue responding task.
