Ulcerative colitis (UC), often referred to as "green cancer", is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease with an unclear etiology, closely associated with the imbalance of hydrogen sulfide (HS) and peroxynitrite (ONOO). HS exhibits anti-inflammatory effects at physiological levels, but excessive concentrations can compromise the intestinal barrier, while ONOO aggravates inflammation. To facilitate the molecular-level monitoring of these compounds in UC, we developed a novel fluorescent probe, , capable of simultaneously detecting HS and ONOO via distinct fluorescent channels in a cascade mode.

Flaviviruses pose a major public health concern across the globe. Among them, Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging and reemerging arthropod-borne flavivirus that has become a major international public health problem following multiple large outbreaks over the past two decades. The majority of infections caused by ZIKV exhibit mild symptoms.

Peroxynitrite (ONOO) and viscosity are critical indicators of lysosome functionality, intimately linked to numerous diseases' pathophysiological processes. Hence, creating reliable analytical techniques to observe fluctuations in lysosomal ONOO and viscosity is highly important. This study presents the development of a novel naphthalimide-based fluorescent probe, Nap-Cy, specifically designed to target lysosomes and simultaneously detect both ONOO and viscosity.

: The use of salivary biomarkers offers a non-invasive approach to understanding the metabolic and inflammatory status of hypertensive patients. This study aimed to quantify the salivary nitric oxide (NO), total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) levels in hypertensive individuals and healthy controls in a sub-population in Saudi Arabia. : This cross-sectional study comprised 40 hypertensive patients (test group, 40-50 years old) and 40 age-matched healthy controls who visited the dental hospital in the College of Dentistry, King Khalid University, for dental treatment.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) NS2B-NS3 is a protein complex composed of NS3 proteases and an NS2B co-factor. The N-terminal protease domain (180 residues) of NS3 (NS3(pro)) interacts directly with a central 40-amino acid hydrophilic domain of NS2B (NS2B(H)) to form an active serine protease. In this study, the recombinant NS2B(H)-NS3(pro) proteases were prepared in and used to compare the enzymatic activity between genotype I (GI) and III (GIII) NS2B-NS3 proteases.

Green synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) are an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach to reduce heavy metal stress in plants. Among heavy metals, cadmium (Cd) possesses higher toxicity to the crops and ultimately reduces their growth and yield. The current study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of green synthesized SiONPs to reduce toxic effects of Cd in melon (Cucumis melo) by regulating physiological parameters, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity, and modulating stress-related gene expression.

  • Endometrial cancer is a significant health issue for women worldwide, being the sixth most common cancer and the 14th leading cause of cancer-related deaths, particularly for high-grade tumors like UEC, DEC, and CS.
  • The study analyzed data from 71 patients diagnosed with these aggressive tumors at SKMCH&RC from 2011 to 2022, focusing on clinicopathological characteristics and survival rates using statistical tools like SPSS and Kaplan-Meier analysis.
  • Results indicated that tumors showed significant correlations with factors such as myometrial invasion and lympho-vascular invasion, with a notable 5-year overall survival rate of 59.1% for those diagnosed at an early pathological stage.

  • The study focused on how psycho-trauma and perceived social support affect coping strategies in young adults aged 18-28 in Pakistan and Afghanistan, investigating various demographic factors like gender and education.
  • Data was collected from 352 participants using standardized questionnaires, revealing significant negative correlations between psycho-trauma and both perceived social support and problem-focused coping strategies.
  • Gender differences were noted, with men favoring problem-focused coping and women leaning towards emotion-focused coping, while various demographic factors influenced coping mechanisms.

Objective: To compare postoperative pain scores at rest and on movement in patients undergoing open inguinal hernia repair between those receiving illioinguinal/illiohypogastric nerve block with ropivacaine or wound infiltration with ropivacaine.

Methods: The randomised clinical trial was conducted at the Department of Anaesthesiology, Aga Khan University Hospital a tertiary care centre from March to August 2019 and comprised patients of either gender scheduled for elective unilateral open inguinal hernia repair under general anaesthesia. They were randomised into illioinguinal/illiohypogastric nerve block group A, and wound infiltration group B.

This paper reports the strong coupling between Al nanostructure and two-dimensional (2D) layered perovskite PEAPbI (PEPI) films. The high exciton binding energy of 118 meV and long carrier lifetime of 216 ps are characterized from the 2D PEAPbI film, which indicates that the excitons in perovskite are robust and can couple to metal plasmons. The ordinary and extraordinary optical dispersions are revealed from the anisotropic 2D perovskite.

Fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) has attracted substantial interest as a target associated with cancer and type II diabetes. FBPase inhibitors targeting the AMP allosteric site have been documented, but their limited selectivity has raised concerns about adverse effects. To address this issue, we designed the affinity/covalent-bond dual-driven inhibitors based on the pharmacophore knowledge of the AMP pocket and neighboring cysteine residue (C179) of FBPase using the cysteine-targeting reactivity warhead screen followed by a structural optimization strategy.

Objective: Excitotoxicity is a common hallmark of epilepsy and other neurological diseases associated with elevated extracellular glutamate levels. Thus, here, we studied the protective effects of (R)-AS-1, a positive allosteric modulator (PAM) of glutamate uptake in epilepsy models.

Methods: (R)-AS-1 was evaluated in a range of acute and chronic seizure models, while its adverse effect profile was assessed in a panel of standard tests in rodents.

  • The study focused on assessing the diagnostic accuracy of MRI in determining if high-grade limb bone sarcoma invaded a joint and required extensive surgical removal.
  • Researchers evaluated preoperative MRI results from 49 patients who underwent surgery for sarcoma in the knee, hip, or shoulder, looking for direct and indirect signs of joint invasion.
  • Findings indicated that MRI is reliable in detecting intra-articular tumor extension, especially when multiple direct signs are present, and combining direct signs with synovial thickening enhances diagnostic accuracy.
