The diagnosis of canine mast cell tumor (MCT) via cytology carries the risk of triggering life-threatening anaphylactic reactions due to massive histamine release. Since mast cells release various lipid mediators, which are excreted in urine, we aimed to explore urinary lipid metabolites as potential non-invasive diagnostic markers for MCT. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based analysis detected 32 types of lipid metabolites in the urine of MCT dogs.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyponatremia is a condition marked by low sodium levels and can occur during the acute phase of many illnesses, but its prevalence and severity in various medical situations is not fully understood.
  • A study at Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center reviewed 2,717 urgent pediatric admissions and found that 260 (13.8%) had hyponatremia, with type 1 diabetes being the most common associated condition (69%).
  • The research highlighted significant hyponatremia in conditions like Kawasaki disease and acute infectious encephalopathy, but noted that conditions like acute bronchial asthma or fractures rarely showed low sodium levels upon arrival.

  • The study aimed to investigate the distribution of IgG subclasses in IgG immunofluorescence-positive IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and its clinicopathological significance.
  • Out of 27 biopsies from patients, IgG1 was the most frequently positive subclass, showing a negative correlation between biopsy age and IgG1 intensity, while Oxford E and C scores were higher in IgG IF-positive cases.
  • The findings suggest that IgG1 plays a prominent role in IgAN, highlighting the need for further research on the implications of IgG subclass staining in understanding the disease's pathogenesis.

Background: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental organisms that are increasingly contributing to human infections. Mycobacterium immunogenum, a variant of NTM discovered in 2001, is a rapidly growing mycobacterium that exhibits multidrug resistance. Reports of infections caused by this organism, particularly tenosynovitis in the musculoskeletal system, are limited.

Hexagonal rare-earth iron oxides (FeO) exhibit spontaneous magnetization and room-temperature ferroelectricity simultaneously. However, achieving a large magnetoelectric coupling necessitates further exploration. Herein, we report the impact of the magnetic phase transition on the ferroelectric properties of epitaxial FeO ( = Tb and Ho) films prepared by pulsed laser deposition.

Objective: Myostatin, which is known as a negative skeleton muscle regulator, is associated with mortality in maintenance hemodialysis patients. However, the significance of serum myostatin concentrations at dialysis initiation has not been established. We investigated the relation between serum myostatin concentrations and mortality or hospitalization within 1 year in incident dialysis patients.

Possible roles of anti-nephrin antibodies in post-transplant recurrent focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) have been reported recently. To confirm these preliminary results, we performed a multi-institutional study of 22 Japanese pediatric kidney transplant recipients with FSGS including eight genetic FSGS and 14 non-genetic (presumed primary) FSGS. Eleven of the 14 non-genetic FSGS patients had post-transplant recurrent FSGS.

Purpose: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) complicated by hypothyroidism exhibit a higher prevalence of urine protein than that in the general population. This study was aimed at investigating thyroid hormones and thyroid hormone-binding proteins excreted in urine to elucidate the urine protein-associated underlying mechanisms of hypothyroidism.

Methods: Between November 2016 and August 2018, thyroid function (serum free T3 [sFT3], free T4 [sFT4], and thyroid-stimulating hormone [sTSH]), kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR]), thyroid antibodies and albumin (Alb) were evaluated in 99 Japanese CKD patients with proteinuria at our outpatient clinic.

Introduction: Severe acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) has been associated with an unacceptably high mortality of 50% or more. Successful discontinuation of RRT is thought to be linked to better outcomes. Although functional and structural renal markers have been evaluated in AKI, little is known about their roles in predicting outcomes at the time of RRT discontinuation.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to establish reference blood pressure (BP) values for 2-year-old Japanese children, as no comprehensive values existed prior.
  • Data were collected from a large cohort study (3361 participants) using auscultation, measuring BP multiple times to ensure accuracy, and analyzed using two statistical models (LMS and polynomial regression).
  • The LMS method was found to be more valid, providing specific systolic and diastolic BP reference values for boys and girls at the 50th percentile for height, ultimately creating a new reference standard for this age group.
