The bimolecular photochemical quenching of the tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium (II) complex by ferricyanide ions in water-ethylene glycol binary media was investigated using a spectrophotometric approach, as previously reported by our research group. Time-resolved spectroscopy revealed that dynamic photochemical quenching occurred via a diffusion-dominated pathway. The static quenching process was found to occur significantly when the concentration of ethylene glycol was greater than 40 wt%.

Bacteria produce polycationic homopoly(amino acid)s, which are characterized by isopeptide backbones. We previously demonstrated that two representative bacterial polycationic isopeptides, ε-poly-l-α-lysine consisting of 25-35 l-α-lysine residues (ε-PαL) and ε-poly-l-β-lysine consisting of l-β-lysine residues (ε-PβL), were internalized into mammalian cells by both energy-independent direct penetration and energy-dependent endocytosis/macropinocytosis, and then diffused throughout the cytosol. Kinetic studies on the photochemical quenching reaction of the tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) complex ([Ru(bpy)]) in water-glycerol binary media were conducted based on the Einstein-Smoluchowski (E-S) theory. Dynamic and static quenching behaviors were analyzed by comparing results from time-resolved spectroscopy and emission spectroscopy. While the dynamic quenching reaction aligns well with the E-S theory, static quenching was observed, leading to a notable increase in the overall photoquenching reaction rate constant.

Background: Acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a major complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) with significant morbidity and mortality, and efficacy of currently available therapeutics are limited. Acute and chronic GVHD are similar in that both are initiated by antigen presenting cells and activation of alloreactive B-cells and T-cells, subsequently leading to inflammation, tissue damage, and organ failure. One difference is that acute GVHD is mostly attributed to T-cell activation and cytokine release, whereas B-cells are the key players in chronic GVHD.

This paper describes the availability of a 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE)-water (W) interfacial system under a controlled interfacial potential difference for the separation of polycationic species. The system was applied to the production of polyethylene glycol-modified ε-poly-L-lysine (PEG-εPL). PEG-εPL is produced by a fermentation process, and the crude product contains a significant amount of non-modified εPL, which is hardly separated by conventional chromatographic techniques.

Grisemycin, salinipeptin, and cypemycin belong to the linaridin class of ribosomally synthesized and posttranslationally modified peptides that contain multiple dehydrobutyrine and D-amino acid residues. The biosynthetic gene clusters of these linaridins lack obvious candidate genes for the dehydratase and epimerase required to introduce dehydrobutyrine and D-amino acid residues, respectively. However, we previously demonstrated that the grisemycin (grm) cluster contained cryptic dehydratase and epimerase genes by heterologous expression of this biosynthetic gene cluster in Streptomyces lividans and proposed that two genes (grmH and grmL) with unknown functions catalyze dehydration and epimerization reactions.
