There is growing evidence that not only serum calcium concentration but also excess calcium load is associated with vascular calcification and mortality in hemodialysis patients. Calcium load in hemodialysis patients cumulatively comes from three different routes: oral intake of calcium including calcium-based phosphate binders, traffic of calcium from/to dialysate, and calcemic action of vitamin D. The K/DOQI guidelines recommend sevelamer hydrochloride instead of calcium-containing phosphate binders to control serum phosphate concentration.

An important pathway of gene transcriptional inactivation is hypermethylation at the CpG islands of promoter regions. Some tumor suppressor genes have been reported to harbor promoter hypermethylation in head and neck cancer. We studied DNA hypermethylation of 4 genes in 42 cases of primary head and neck cancer.

In hemodialysis patients, bone diseases are serious complications resulting in fractures and extraosseous calcification. The latest clinical practice guidelines by the National Kidney Foundation (New York, US) recommend a dialysate calcium concentration (D-Ca) of 2.

Measurements for three-point flexural tests were made at three different temperatures and cross-head speeds, while measurements for fatigue tests were made under three different loads in air or water at 37 degrees C after each cycle. The flexural strength and elastic modulus of the immersed specimens were significantly lower than those of the dry specimens at the same cross-head speed and temperature.

Bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclast activity and are widely used for the treatment of myeloma bone disease. We analyzed the changes in urinary cross-linked N-telopeptides of collagen (u-NTx) and urinary calcium (u-Ca) after bisphosphonate alendronate therapy in ten patients with myeloma bone disease.

The airway management and anesthesia maintenance during the laryngoscopic surgery is essential for a safe operation. For the benign laryngeal obstructive disease such as a large mass or a foreign body of the upper airway, it is difficult to secure the airway. Sometimes they might be hazardous and potentially lethal.

The Rbp proteins in cyanobacteria are RNA-binding proteins with a single RNA recognition motif or RRM. A comprehensive assembly of genomic data suggests that there are two major classes of Rbp proteins (classes I and II) that diverged before the diversification of cyanobacteria. Class I proteins are further classified into two types with or without a C-terminal glycine-rich domain.

T1-weighted imaging of muscle MRI disclosed that the thigh muscles, including the semimembranosus, biceps femoris longus and the vastus lateralis muscles, showed high intensity signals with atrophy. Contrarily, the sartorius, gracilis and rectus femoris muscles were comparably preserved.

Dryness can also occur in the absence of glandular destruction. Patients with SS have autoantibodies that bind to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the exocrine glands.

CRF01_AE was concluded to be a predominant strain and the nucleotide CSs in gag p17 and env-V3 showed only 1.26% and no difference from CS in the Los Alamos database, respectively.

It was hypothesized that the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) proteins may be activated by proteinuria in proximal tubular cells. To test this hypothesis, murine proximal tubular cells were treated with albumin (30 mg/ml medium) for various lengths of time.

The indication and preferred dissection field for prophylactic neck dissection for submandibular gland cancer are controversial and have not been standardized. We reviewed 27 patients who underwent a definitive operation for previously untreated submandibular gland cancer. The 27 patients consisted of 13 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma, 6 patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 6 patients with adenocarcinoma, and 2 patients with squamous cell carcinoma.

The 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of the rbpA1 gene is involved in the cold-regulation. We compared the regulation of the rbp genes in three strains of cyanobacteria having different temperature optima, namely, a mesophilic strain Anabaena sp.

Glia maturation factor-beta (GMF-beta), a 17-kDa brain-specific protein originally purified as a neurotrophic factor from brain, was induced in renal proximal tubular (PT) cells by proteinuria. To examine the role of GMF-beta in PT cells, we constructed PT cell lines continuously expressing GMF-beta.
