Large passenger ships are characterised as enclosed and crowded indoor spaces with frequent interactions between travellers, providing conditions that facilitate disease transmission. This study aims to provide an indoor ship CO dataset for inferring thermal comfort, ventilation and infectious disease transmission risk evaluation. Indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring was conducted in nine environments (three cabins, buffet, gym, bar, restaurant, pub and theatre), on board a cruise ship voyaging across the UK and EU, with the study conducted in the framework of the EU HEALTHY SAILING project.

Enchondroma rarely occurs in the distal phalanx, and avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon in this area is also rare. We report a case of recurrent enchondroma in the distal phalanx, which required reconstruction for an accidental FDP avulsion during surgery. A 36-year-old right-handed woman visited our hospital with a suspected recurrence of enchondroma and a planned surgery.

Ca/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is one of hundreds of host-cell factors involved in the propagation of type A influenza virus (IAV), although its mechanism of action is unknown. Here, we identified CaMKII inhibitory peptide M3 by targeting its kinase domain using affinity-based screening of a tailored random peptide library. M3 inhibited IAV cytopathicity and propagation in cells by specifically inhibiting the acute-phase activation of retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I), which is uniquely regulated by CaMKII.

This study was performed to investigate the utility of U-shaped osseous release (USOR) for Le Fort 1 osteotomy as a novel surgical technique for superior repositioning. Thirty-six patients with jaw deformities were divided into 2 groups based on whether or not USOR was adopted (18 in the non-adoption group and 18 in the adoption group). Maxillary surgical time, blood loss, and discrepancy from the planned amount of movement (anterior-posterior and superior-inferior directions) were compared between the 2 groups.

Article Synopsis
  • A 56-year-old woman undergoing endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR) presented with a rare muscle called the transverse carpal muscle (TCM) found near the transverse carpal ligament (TCL).
  • Due to the presence of the TCM, the surgical team switched from ECTR to an open carpal tunnel release to better understand the anatomy and reduce the risk of damaging surrounding tendons and blood vessels.
  • The TCM was only found on one side, as it does not always appear bilaterally, highlighting how the distal incision first approach during ECTR helped identify it, which may have been missed with traditional methods.

  • Pathologies linked to blood flow issues in nerves have been noted in chronic nerve compression neuropathy, and the effectiveness of fluorescein angiography (FAG) and laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) for assessing blood flow is explored.
  • The study compares FAG and LDF in animal models of chronic nerve compression, finding both methods successfully monitor reduced blood flow, with FAG displaying a strong correlation to muscle action potential results, unlike LDF.
  • FAG shows promise for use in clinical settings, as evidenced by its significant correlation with preoperative muscle action potential in patients undergoing carpal tunnel release surgery, suggesting it could enhance diagnostic and surgical outcomes.

  • The study examines genetic mutations in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), focusing on SF3B1 and SRSF2, using multi-omics data to analyze their effects on patient outcomes.
  • It identifies seven factors from clinical, genetic, and transcriptomic data, highlighting a strong link between SF3B1 mutations and increased inflammation, which is paradoxically associated with better prognosis for certain patients.
  • SRSF2 mutations correlate with poor outcomes due to high levels of aging and malignant cells, while the expression of retrotransposons is identified as a risk factor, showcasing an advanced method for assessing MDS risk beyond traditional scoring systems.

We investigated a newly developed digitized Trail Making Test using an iPad (iTMT) as a brief cognitive function screening test. We found that the iTMT part-A (iTMT-A) can estimate generalized cognitive function in rehabilitation inpatients examined using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Forty-two hospitalized participants undergoing rehabilitation (rehab participants), 30 of whom had cerebral infarction/hemorrhage (stroke participants), performed the iTMT five times (first three times: iTMT-A; fourth: paper version of TMT-A; fifth: the inverse version of iTMT-A) and the MMSE once.

  • A 68-year-old woman with a distal radial fracture and ulnar styloid fracture underwent surgery for fixation using a palmar locking plate and tension band wiring.
  • Despite the surgery, her fracture did not heal after three months, prompting the use of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) to encourage healing.
  • After starting LIPUS treatment, complete bone healing was confirmed five months later, suggesting that LIPUS could be a viable treatment for delayed union of distal radial fractures post-surgery.

Background: Ulnar shortening osteotomy using various osteotomy sites, osteotomy methods, and surgical techniques with a variety of implants has been reported, but nonunion rates and the duration of bone healing are not uniform by the authors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the duration of bone healing and nonunion ratio in patients who underwent ulnar shortening osteotomy by a 5-hole nonlocking plate with a simple transverse osteotomy for ulnar impaction syndrome and to determine the correlation between the gap length of the osteotomy site and the duration of bone healing.

Methods: We assessed patients who underwent ulnar shortening osteotomy for ulnar impaction syndrome using a 5-hole nonlocking plate fixation followed by a simple transverse osteotomy between July 2012 and October 2021.

Background: People who were previously hospitalised with stroke may have difficulty operating a motor vehicle, and their driving aptitude needs to be evaluated to prevent traffic accidents in today's car-based society. Although the association between motor-cognitive functions and driving aptitude has been extensively studied, motor-cognitive functions required for driving have not been elucidated.

Methods: In this paper, we propose a machine-learning algorithm that introduces sparse regularization to automatically select driving aptitude-related indices from 65 input indices obtained from 10 tests of motor-cognitive function conducted on 55 participants with stroke.
