Endurance exercise training (ET) is an effective treatment in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), but the efficacy of resistance training in this patient population has been only scarcely evaluated. In this multicenter, randomized trial, we evaluated the effects of combined endurance and resistance training over 12 months in patients with HFpEF. The primary endpoint was a modified Packer score, including all-cause mortality, hospitalizations classified as potentially related to heart failure or exercise and changes in peak oxygen consumption ( ), diastolic function (E/e'), New York Heart Association (NYHA) class and global self-assessment (GSA).

Article Synopsis
  • The study followed up on irradiated breast cancer patients who had undergone reconstruction using DIEP and LD flaps over a period of 12 years, assessing 67% of the original participants.
  • Patient-reported outcomes and aesthetic evaluations were measured, showing no significant differences between the two reconstruction methods in satisfaction, but highlighting that DIEP patients valued breast aesthetics more highly.
  • The findings indicated a shift in patient preference from LD to DIEP flaps over time, emphasizing the relevance of long-term studies in understanding satisfaction and outcomes in breast reconstruction.

Radiotherapy (RT), a common cancer treatment, unintentionally harms surrounding tissues, including the skin, and hinders wound healing years after treatment. This study aims to understand the mechanisms behind these late-onset adverse effects. We compare skin biopsies from previously irradiated (RT) and non-irradiated (RT) sites in breast cancer survivors who underwent RT years ago.

Aims: Heart failure (HF) has a major impact on exercise tolerance that may (in part) be due to abnormalities in body and skeletal muscle composition. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess how differences in whole-body and skeletal muscle composition between patients with HF and non-HF controls (CON) contribute to reduced peak oxygen uptake (VOpeak).

Methods And Results: The PubMed database was searched from 1975 to May 2024 for eligible studies.

Aims: Exercise training (ET) is an effective therapy in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), but the influence of different ET characteristics is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the associations between ET frequency, duration, intensity [% heart rate reserve (%HRR)] and estimated energy expenditure (EEE) with the change in peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2) over 3 months of moderate continuous training (MCT, 5×/week) or high-intensity interval training (HIIT, 3×/week) in HFpEF.

Methods And Results: ET duration and heart rate (HR) were recorded with a smartphone application.

Background: Vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) is one option among other surgical treatments in the management of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). The cause of concern regarding VLNT harvested from the groin has been the potential development of secondary lower-extremity lymphedema. This study explored the risks associated with donor-site morbidity following groin VLNT, with or without concomitant breast reconstruction.

In recent years, major advances in our understanding of risk factors implicated in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD), in available tools for early detection of CVD, and in effective interventions to prevent subclinical or clinically manifest disease, have led to an increasing appreciation of prevention as a major pillar of cardiovascular (CV) medicine. Preventive Cardiology has evolved into a dynamic sub-speciality focused on the promotion of CV health through all stages of life, and on the management of individuals at risk of developing CVD or experiencing recurrent CV events, through interdisciplinary care in different settings. As the level of knowledge, specialized skills, experience, and committed attitudes related to CV prevention has exceeded core cardiology training, the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) has placed major emphasis on continuous education and training of physicians and allied professionals involved in CV prevention, with the aim of setting standards for practice and improving quality of care.

Randomized intra-haemodialysis and home-based exercise trials have demonstrated similar efficacy in improving physical performance, particularly in increasing walking distance. During dialysis sessions, patients can engage in structured, supervised activities such as cycling or resistance exercises, ensuring safety and immediate feedback from healthcare professionals. This structured nature can significantly enhance adherence, making exercise a regular part of the patient's treatment schedule.

Objective: Although early-detected cervical cancer is associated with good survival, the prognosis for late-stage disease is poor and treatment options are sparse. Mismatch repair deficiency (MMR-D) has surfaced as a predictor of prognosis and response to immune checkpoint inhibitor(s) in several cancer types, but its value in cervical cancer remains unclear. This study aimed to define the prevalence of MMR-D in cervical cancer and assess the prognostic value of MMR protein expression.

Cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality is high in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Most patients reveal a high prevalence of CV risk factors such as diabetes or arterial hypertension and many have manifest cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as coronary artery disease and chronic heart failure with an increased risk of clinical events including sudden cardiac death. Diabetes mellitus and hypertension contribute to the development of CKD and the prevalence of CKD is in the range of 20-65% in diabetic and 30-50% in hypertensive patients.
