The ninth standard of accreditation as outlined by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education (COE) mandates that all accredited colleges of veterinary medicine must provide instruction in medicine and surgery, including principles of practice, hands-on experiences with diagnostic methods, and interpretation of clinical findings. In equine practice, diagnostic imaging is used as a first-line diagnostic approach and is an integral part of pre-purchase and lameness examinations. Accuracy and consistency of radiographic interpretation relies heavily upon procedural techniques to acquire diagnostic images and overcome both motion artifacts and obliquity.

Policies on the collection, analysis, and reporting of sex and gender in Australian health and medical research: a mixed methods study.

Objective: To explore the policies of key organisations in Australian health and medical research on defining, collecting, analysing, and reporting data on sex and gender, and to identify barriers to and facilitators of developing and implementing such policies.

Study Design: Mixed methods study: online planning forum; survey of organisations in Australian health and medical research, and internet search for policies defining, collecting, analysing, and reporting data by sex and gender in health and medical research.

Sex and gender are inadequately considered in health and medical research, policy and practice, leading to preventable disparities in health and wellbeing. Several global institutions, journals, and funding bodies have developed policies and guidelines to improve the inclusion of diverse participants and consideration of sex and gender in research design and reporting and the delivery of clinical care. However, according to recent evaluations, these policies have had limited impact on the inclusion of diverse research participants, adequate reporting of sex and gender data and reducing preventable inequities in access to, and quality provision of, healthcare.

Background: Sharenting, parents' sharing of personal information about children on social media is becoming increasingly controversial. Its potential risks have drawn some parents to engage in mindful sharenting: parents' application of strategies to reduce the potentially negative effects of sharenting, as they are aware of the impact sharenting can have on the child's privacy.

Objective: This study aimed to determine how sex and gender are being incorporated into Australian medical research publications and if this is influenced by journals endorsing the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines, which contain criteria for sex and gender reporting.

Methods: Analysis of original research articles published in Australia's top 10 medical journals in 2020.

Results: From the 10 leading journals, 1,136 articles were eligible for analysis, including 990 human participant populations.

Contextualising sex and gender research to improve women's health: An early- and mid-career researcher perspective.

The field of sex and gender research in health and medicine is growing, and many early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) are developing skills in this area. As EMCRs specialising in sex and gender research, we aim to better understand sex- and gender-based determinants of human health, challenge long-standing and pervasive gender biases, and contribute to improving the evidence base upon which clinical guidelines and policy interventions are developed. To effectively achieve these goals, we believe that EMCRs would benefit from understanding the challenges of working in this space and participate in driving change in three key areas.

Reimagining consumer involvement: Resilient system indicators in the COVID-19 pandemic response in New South Wales, Australia.

Background: Reflections on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic often evoke the concept of 'resilience' to describe the way health systems adjusted and adapted their functions to withstand the disturbance of a crisis, and in some cases, improve and transform in its wake. Drawing from this, this study focuses on the role of consumer representatives in healthcare services in initiating changes to the way they participated in the pandemic response in the state of New South Wales in Australia.

Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with two cohorts of consumer representatives.

Historically, women's health has focused on reproductive health. However, noncommunicable and communicable diseases comprise much of the burden of disease in women. A quantitative analysis of the main health content of articles published in six women's health journals (WHJ) and five general medical journals (GMJ) in 2010 and 2020 was conducted to categorize the main medical area topics of published articles and the life stage under study.

Sex and Gender in COVID-19 Vaccine Research: Substantial Evidence Gaps Remain.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic there has been a global call for sex/gender-disaggregated data to be made available, which has uncovered important findings about COVID-19 testing, incidence, severity, hospitalisations, and deaths. This mini review scopes the evidence base for efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of COVID-19 vaccines from both experimental and observational research, and asks whether (1) women and men were equally recruited and represented in vaccine research, (2) the outcomes of studies were presented or analysed by sex and/or gender, and (3) there is evidence of sex and/or gender differences in outcomes. Following a PubMed search, 41 articles were eligible for inclusion, including seven randomised controlled trials (RCTs), 11 cohort studies, eight cross-sectional surveys, eight routine surveillance studies, and seven case series.

Phosphate functionalised titania for heavy metal removal from acidic sulfate solutions.

Adsorbent materials based on titania and phosphate are ideal for treatment of solutions contaminated with heavy metals under acidic conditions, due to their inherent chemical stability and low pKa. Herein, phosphate functionalised titania has been investigated for the first time for removal of heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Cu, Eu, U) under conditions relevant to acid mine drainage (pH 2-5 sulfuric acid). Successful functionalisation was found to depend on the phase of titania used, with anatase preferred according to computational results from density functional theory.

Engaging consumers in health research: a narrative review.

Objective Consumer and community engagement (CCE) in research is increasingly valued in a contemporary healthcare environment that seeks to genuinely partner with consumers and the wider community. Although there is widespread agreement at research governance levels as to the benefits of CCE in research, there is little available research-based guidance as to how best to proceed with CCE organisationally and how to manage and overcome barriers. The aim of this narrative review was to draw together the available research, review findings and relevant governance-related material and to discuss these in light of a case series among research-engaged consumers in order to chart a practical way forward.

Sialic acid at the terminus of cell surface glycoconjugates is a critical element in cell-cell recognition, receptor binding and immune responses. Sialyltransferases (ST), the enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of sialylated glycans are highly upregulated in cancer and the resulting hypersialylation of the tumour cell surface correlates strongly with tumour growth, metastasis and drug resistance. Inhibitors of human STs, in particular human ST6Gal I, are thus expected to be valuable chemical tools for the discovery of novel anticancer drugs.

The combined shoulder assessment: a convenient method for obtaining equivalent outcome scores.

Background: Outcome scores are useful tools with respect to quantifying how pain and limitations in strength and movement affect the patient's functionality and lifestyle. Three shoulder outcome methods [Oxford, Constant and QuickDASH (Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand)] are commonly used in practice but collectively consist of 34 questions, taking approximately 7 min to complete. We have developed a concise shoulder assessment to derive three equivalent outcome scores in a 12-item patient-reporting questionnaire.

Surgical reconstruction of unrepairable pectoralis major rupture using tendo-achilles allograft.

Rupture of the pectoralis major remains an infrequent injury, although, recently, it has been reported more commonly as a result of the expansion and increasing popularity of competitive sports, as well as developments in sports medicine. A number of surgical repair techniques have been described for direct repair in the acute setting. However, on occasion, the pectoralis major muscle is so retracted that a tension-free direct repair is not possible.

A Prospective Study of Sudden Cardiac Death among Children and Young Adults.

Background: Sudden cardiac death among children and young adults is a devastating event. We performed a prospective, population-based, clinical and genetic study of sudden cardiac death among children and young adults.

Methods: We prospectively collected clinical, demographic, and autopsy information on all cases of sudden cardiac death among children and young adults 1 to 35 years of age in Australia and New Zealand from 2010 through 2012.

Spontaneous expulsion of large submucosal uterine fibroid without embolisation - a case study.

: This case involved a 35-year-old G6P0 with multiple uterine fibroids detected at 12 weeks gestation. Fibroid growth was monitored throughout pregnancy, and intrauterine growth restriction (< 5th centile) was detected at 20 weeks. Fetal demise occurred at 22+ weeks gestation at which time the largest of fibroids measured 150 × 100 × 118 mm and labour was induced.

First trimester findings of combined duodenal and oesophageal atresia with a trachea-oesophageal fistula.

This case demonstrates the ability to diagnose a significant duodenal atresia coexisting with an oesophageal atresia with associated tracheo-oesophageal fistula within the first trimester, however the mechanisms underlying the sonographic features remain uncertain.
