: On 4 August 2020, an explosion occurred in Beirut, Lebanon. Hundreds of people were killed, thousands injured and displaced. An initiative was rapidly initiated to provide remote support informed by psychological first aid for the mental health of Lebanese young adults affected by the blast.

SUMOylation inhibitor TAK-981 (subasumstat) synergizes with 5-azacytidine in preclinical models of acute myeloid leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemias (AML) are severe hematomalignancies with dismal prognosis. The post-translational modification SUMOylation plays key roles in leukemogenesis and AML response to therapies. Here, we show that TAK-981 (subasumstat), a first-in-class SUMOylation inhibitor, is endowed with potent anti-leukemic activity in various preclinical models of AML.

DeSUMOylation of chromatin-bound proteins limits the rapid transcriptional reprogramming induced by daunorubicin in acute myeloid leukemias.

Genotoxicants have been used for decades as front-line therapies against cancer on the basis of their DNA-damaging actions. However, some of their non-DNA-damaging effects are also instrumental for killing dividing cells. We report here that the anthracycline Daunorubicin (DNR), one of the main drugs used to treat Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), induces rapid (3 h) and broad transcriptional changes in AML cells.

Long-Term Outcomes of Big Bubble Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty in Mucopolysaccharidoses: A Retrospective Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the long-term surgical and visual outcomes of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) after big bubble deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (BB-DALK).

Methods: This was a retrospective case series of patients with MPS who underwent BB-DALK at a single academic institution. All patients had corneal clouding secondary to MPS limiting visual acuity for which keratoplasty was indicated.

Effect of Cetuximab-Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles on the Cytotoxicity and Phenotypic Evolution of Colorectal Cancer Cells.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is estimated to be overexpressed in 60~80% of colorectal cancer (CRC), which is associated with a poor prognosis. Anti-EGFR targeted monoclonal antibodies (cetuximab and panitumumab) have played an important role in the treatment of metastatic CRC. However, the therapeutic response of anti-EGFR monoclonal antibodies is limited due to multiple resistance mechanisms.

In nursing homes, due to time constraints, lack of communication can influence the quality of information exchanged, which influences the outcomes of healthcare for residents. Nurses' proximity to the nursing home resident, their knowledge, and skill serve as an opportunity to communicate and facilitate patient-centered goals and improve treatment decision-making. Concepts within the cybernetic communication literature entail systemic interactive relationships that enable the sharing of knowledge and expertise.

Repurposing of Acriflavine to Target Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Treatment.

Drug repurposing has lately received increasing interest in several diseases especially in cancers, due to its advantages in facilitating the development of new therapeutic strategies, by adopting a cost-friendly approach and avoiding the strict Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. Acriflavine (ACF) is an FDA approved molecule that has been extensively studied since 1912 with antiseptic, trypanocidal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer effects. ACF has been shown to block the growth of solid and hematopoietic tumor cells.

Acriflavine targets oncogenic STAT5 signaling in myeloid leukemia cells.

Acriflavine (ACF) is an antiseptic with anticancer properties, blocking the growth of solid and haematopoietic tumour cells. Moreover, this compound has been also shown to overcome the resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents. ACF has been shown to target hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) activity, which are key effectors of hypoxia-mediated chemoresistance.

Strategies to prevent HIV transmission to serodiscordant couples.

Introduction: The use antiretroviral reduces the sexual transmission of HIV, expanding interventions for serodiscordant couples.

Objective: This article aims to review the use of antiretroviral and other prevention interventions among serodiscordant couples and to analyze its use in Brazil.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed through the MEDLINE database and bases included in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde.

Sandhoff disease: a prevalent form of infantile GM2 gangliosidosis in Lebanon.

All cases clinically diagnosed as Tay-Sachs disease at the American University Hospital, Beirut, during a period of 22 years (1957--1979) were reviewed. Of a total of 15 cases, seven had serum hexosaminidase tested and proved to have Sandhoff disease. In two other cases, parents were tested and found to be Sandhoff carriers.
