The importance of different acoustic properties for the perception of place of articulation in prevocalic stop consonants was investigated from a developmental perspective. Eight adults and eight children in each of the age groups, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 11 years, listened to synthesized syllables comprised of all combinations of [b d g] and [i a]. The synthesis parameters were adapted from Blumstein and Stevens [J.

The capacity of substance P (SP) and endogenously released tachykinins to liberate histamine was examined in isolated tracheally perfused guinea pig lungs. Increasing doses of tracheally injected SP were associated with the recovery of increasing amounts of histamine from lung effluent. The mechanism of SP-induced histamine liberation was explored in studies with neurokinin-(NK) receptor agonists and antagonists.

We describe two patients with AIDS who developed new diffuse pulmonary infiltrates during the course of their hospitalization. In both cases, the infiltrates were attributed to pulmonary hemorrhage complicating an existing condition rather than representing a new pulmonary process. Identification of pulmonary hemorrhage in these patients allowed for discontinuation of treatment with empiric medications and continued appropriate supportive care.

Type 5 adenovirus mutants that differentially express E1A 13S, 12S, or 9S mRNAs were constructed to study the role of their gene products in transformation. H5dl520 expresses the 243-amino-acid (AA) protein encoded in the 12S mRNA but not the 13S mRNA-encoded 289-AA protein. This mutant transformed both cloned rat embryo fibroblast (CREF) cells and baby rat kidney (BRK) cells at a frequency 40-100 times greater than did wild-type viruses.

Infection of the mammary gland (mastitis) was produced by infusing ten quarters 2/cow x 5 cows) with Staphylococcus aureus strain 305. Mastitic and normal quarters were then infused with a preparation containing two levels of penicillin G (100,000 and 200,000 IU) in 10 mL of 3% aluminum monostearate and peanut oil. Milk penicillin levels were determined prior to treatment and twice daily for eight milkings after treatment.

Even by American standards, the far western universities of British Columbia and Saskatchewan have been outstanding producers of scientists. Next have been the small Maritime Province universities of Acadia and Mount Allison. The larger universities in Ontario and Quebec were much lower in scientific productivity, and the Roman Catholic schools lowest of all.
