Immunocytochemistry is now established in many histology laboratories for diagnostic purposes and is routinely used in ascribing an origin to poorly differentiated tumours. This raises the question of whether traditional morphological skills are being abandoned in favour of new technology and, if so, whether that is justified. Twenty-three lymph node biopsies diagnosed as anaplastic carcinoma, reticulosarcoma or unclassifiable tumour between 1940 and 1960 (when immunocytochemistry was not available) were retrieved from the archives of the Radcliffe Infirmary.

A case of giant cell myocarditis in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is reported. To our knowledge, this is a previously unrecorded association and supports the hypothesis that the aetiology of giant cell myocarditis is related to a changed immune state. Immunohistochemical investigation of this case with a panel of monoclonal antibodies against a range of leucocyte and muscle antigens supports the view that the giant cells have a histiocytic rather than a myogenic origin.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSodium dodecyltriethoxy sulphate (SDTES), either pure or as a component of commercial surfactant mixtures, underwent rapid primary biodegradation by mixed bacterial cultures in OECD screen and river-water die-away tests. Inoculation of [35S]SDTES-containing solutions with OECD screen test media acclimatized to surfactants or their degradation products led to production of various 35S-labelled glycol sulphates and their oxidation products, all known to occur during degradation of [35S]SDTES by pure bacterial isolates. Triethylene glycol monosulphate was the major catabolite together with smaller amounts of di- and monoethylene glycol monosulphates implying, by analogy with pure cultures, that ether-cleavage was the major primary biodegradation step.

Three cases of pneumatocele formation secondary to hydrocarbon ingestion are reported and analyzed along with 12 from the literature. The cases display a spectrum of clinical severity. After a period of 3 to 15 days, during which most patients became asymptomatic, pneumatoceles were noted radiologically, usually as an unexpected finding on follow-up roentgenograms.
