Association of Serum Cholesterol Levels with Short-term Mortality in Patients with Acute Pulmonary Embolism.

Background: Serum cholesterols play an important role in pathophysiology and prognosis of acute thrombotic diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic value of serum lipid parameters in acute pulmonary embolism (APE).

Methods: From January 2008 to January 2014 a total of 275 patients who were hospitalised with a diagnosis of APE were retrospectively screened.

A case of primary cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma with surgical removal and mitral valve repair.

Primary cardiac tumors are rare. Nearly 25% of primary cardiac tumors are malignant, with rhabdomyosarcoma being the second most common primary sarcoma. Symptoms are variable, and the clinical presentation depends on the location and propagation of the tumor.

Troponin and anti-troponin autoantibody levels in patients with ventricular noncompaction.

Ventricular hypertrabeculation/noncompaction is a morphologic and functional anomaly of myocardium characterized by prominent trabeculae accompanied by deep recessus. Dilated cardiomyopathy with left ventricular failure is observed in these patients, while the cause or pathophysiologic nature of this complication is not known. Anti-troponin antibodies are formed against circulating cardiac troponins after an acute coronary event or conditions associated with chronic myocyte necrosis, such as dilated cardiomyopathy.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy resembling acute high lateral myocardial infarction.

A 65-year-old female patient admitted to the emergency department was diagnosed with acute high lateral myocardial infarction, but later Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) was discovered. She had squeezing chest pain that started shortly after an emotional stress. The electrocardiogram revealed a loss of R wave voltage in leads V1 to V4 and an ST-segment elevation in I and aVL.

Exercise-induced increase in lipid peroxidation in patients with chronic heart failure: relation to exercise intolerance.

Background: Little is known about the relationship between exercise intolerance and lipid peroxidation in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between exercise-induced plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) changes in CHF patients and to determine whether there is any association between plasma MDA levels and exercise capacity assessed by cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Methods: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing was applied to 31 CHF patients (16 ischemic, 15 idiopathic) and controls.

Plasma homocysteine concentration in patients with poor or good coronary collaterals.

Background: Elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations are associated with an increased risk of vascular disease. Hcy is known to inhibit endothelial cell proliferation in vitro. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of plasma Hcy concentrations on development of collateral circulation in single-vessel chronic total occlusion.

A case of prosthetic mitral valve Brucella endocarditis complicated with torsades de pointes.

Brucella endocarditis is a zoonosis transmitted by contaminated dairy products. Endocarditis is a rare complication of brucellosis and mainly the aortic valve is infected. We present the case of a female patient with prosthetic mitral valve endocarditis associated with QT prolongation and torsades de pointes.
