Objective: Acetaminophen and indomethacin are used for medical management of a patent ductus arteriosus. This study compared the efficacy of these agents in ELBW infants.

Study Design: This was a retrospective study of all courses of indomethacin and acetaminophen.

Free-breeding dogs have occupied the Galápagos Islands at least since the 1830s; however, it was not until the 1900s that dog populations grew substantially, endangering wildlife and spreading disease. In 1981, efforts to control the population size of free-roaming dogs began. Yet, there exist large free-roaming dog populations on the islands of Isabela and Santa Cruz whose ancestry has never been assessed on a genome-wide scale.

Cyanobacteria are the oldest photoautotrophic lineage that release oxygen during photosynthesis, an ability that possibly evolved as far as 3.5 billion years ago and changed the Earth's environment-both in water and on land. Linked to the mechanism of carbon accumulation by cyanobacteria during photosynthesis are their calcifying properties, a process of biologically mediated mineralization of CO by precipitation with calcium to CaCO.

Review of ecological valuation and equivalency analysis methods for assessing temperate nearshore submerged aquatic vegetation.

Nearshore seagrass, kelp, and other macroalgae beds (submerged aquatic vegetation [SAV]) are productive and important ecosystems. Mitigating anthropogenic impacts on these habitats requires tools to quantify their ecological value and the debits and credits of impact and mitigation. To summarize and clarify the state of SAV habitat quantification and available tools, we searched peer-reviewed literature and other agency documents for methods that either assigned ecological value to or calculated equivalencies between impact and mitigation in SAV.

Efficacy of Levetiracetam vs Phenobarbital as First Line Therapy for the Treatment of Neonatal Seizures.

Objective: Seizures are one of the most common neurologic complications seen in a neonate. Historically, phenobarbital has been the agent of choice, but can lead to adverse neurologic outcomes, which has contributed to the use of other agents. Levetiracetam has proven great efficacy with an excellent safety profile in older patients, causing interest of its use in neonates.

Stemming from early seminal notions of molecular recognition and encapsulation, three-dimensional, cavity-containing capsular compounds and assemblies have attracted intense interest due to the ability to modulate chemical and physical properties of species encapsulated within these confined spaces compared to bulk environments. With such a diverse range of covalent motifs and non-covalent (supramolecular) interactions available to assemble building blocks, an incredibly wide-range of capsular-type architectures have been developed. Furthermore, synthetic tunability of the internal environments gives chemists the opportunity to engineer systems for uses in sensing, sequestration, catalysis and transport of molecules, just to name a few.

Preclinical evaluation of targeted therapies for central nervous system metastases.

The central nervous system (CNS) represents a site of sanctuary for many metastatic tumors when systemic therapies that control the primary tumor cannot effectively penetrate intracranial lesions. Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) are the most likely of all neoplasms to metastasize to the brain, with up to 60% of patients developing CNS metastases during the disease process. Targeted therapies such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have helped reduce lung cancer mortality but vary considerably in their capacity to control CNS metastases.

Current influenza vaccine strategies have yet to overcome significant obstacles, including rapid antigenic drift of seasonal influenza viruses, in generating efficacious long-term humoral immunity. Due to the necessity of germinal center formation in generating long-lived high affinity antibodies, the germinal center has increasingly become a target for the development of novel or improvement of less-efficacious vaccines. However, there remains a major gap in current influenza research to effectively target T follicular helper cells during vaccination to alter the germinal center reaction.

Currently, the field of neurobiology of language is based on data from only a few Indo-European languages. The majority of this data comes from younger adults neglecting other age groups. Here we present a multimodal database which consists of task-based and resting state fMRI, structural MRI, and EEG data while participants over 65 years old listened to sections of the story The Little Prince in Cantonese.

Effective animal husbandry aims to produce behavioral profiles consistent with those observed in wild counterparts. However, few studies have examined the impacts of management history on sociality. We investigate social dynamics in a group of Javan gibbons () at Perth Zoo using behavioral and proximity data.

COVID-19 Infection and ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Lessons in Disease Management During a Pandemic.

The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, causing the COVID-19 pandemic, has profoundly impacted global health, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. This paper presents a case study highlighting the heightened risk of severe cardiovascular complications following COVID-19 infection. A 61-year-old male with hyperlipidemia was discharged after COVID-19 pneumonia treatment and experienced a severe ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) within a day of discharge.

Furcellaran: Impact of Concentration, Rheological Properties, and Structure on Ice Recrystallization Inhibition Activity.

Recrystallization is considered the main damaging mechanism during the frozen storage of biologic materials. In this study, furcellaran, a polysaccharide related to κ-carrageenan, was studied for its concentration-dependent effect on ice crystal growth and recrystallization. The structure and sulfate content of the utilized furcellaran was analyzed by H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, ion chromatography, and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography.

Methods: We used self-respondent data on adults aged 50+ years in 13 countries from 3 surveys (United States: Health and Retirement Study, 1998-2018; England: English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, 2002-2018; 11 European countries: Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, 2004-2019).

Interprofessional reconstruction of a policy for academic advancement: The evolution and evaluation of scholarship for today, tomorrow, and beyond.

Within higher education, scholarship is narrowly and inconsistently defined, limiting recognition of evolving faculty expectations, particularly for nursing faculty. At this academic medical center, a campus-wide, multi-school, academic advancement policy was achieved with a broader definition of scholarship that included: peer-reviewed publication of federally funded research, as well as innovation in curriculum development, teaching methodology, community engagement, safety and quality improvement, clinical practice, and health policy that would be applicable to tenure and non-tenure track faculty. The background, process, and outcomes of developing an expanded definition of scholarship that encompasses new and evolving areas of scholarship for a reconstructed academic personnel policy is presented.

Care cascades following low-value cervical cancer screening in dually enrolled Veterans.

Background: Veterans dually enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration (VA) and Medicare commonly experience downstream services as part of a care cascade after an initial low-value service. Our objective was to characterize the frequency and cost of low-value cervical cancer screening and subsequent care cascades among Veterans dually enrolled in VA and Medicare.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study used VA and Medicare administrative data from fiscal years 2015 to 2019.

Understanding American Indian tribal college student knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors surrounding alternative tobacco products.

Objectives: To examine knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors about alternative tobacco products among American Indian tribal college students.

Participants: One hundred and five tribal college students.

Methods: Focus groups, one interview, and demographic surveys.

Co-formulation of the rF1V plague vaccine with depot-formulated cytokines enhances immunogenicity and efficacy to elicit protective responses against aerosol challenge in mice.

This study evaluated a depot-formulated cytokine-based adjuvant to improve the efficacy of the recombinant F1V (rF1V) plague vaccine and examined the protective response following aerosol challenge in a murine model. The results of this study showed that co-formulation of the Alhydrogel-adsorbed rF1V plague fusion vaccine with the depot-formulated cytokines recombinant human interleukin 2 (rhuIL-2) and/or recombinant murine granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rmGM-CSF) significantly enhances immunogenicity and significant protection at lower antigen doses against a lethal aerosol challenge. These results provide additional support for the co-application of the depot-formulated IL-2 and/or GM-CSF cytokines to enhance vaccine efficacy.

The Experiences of Black Students in Physical Therapy Education in Texas: A Qualitative Study.

Introduction: Racial or ethnic minorities are underrepresented in many health care professions, including physical therapy. Understanding the experiences of minority students in graduate education provides insight into how physical therapy educational programs can promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are factors that have been shown to improve patient outcomes. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively analyze and describe the lived experiences of Black student physical therapists (PT) in Texas.

OCA-B/Pou2af1 is sufficient to promote CD4 T cell memory and prospectively identifies memory precursors.

The molecular mechanisms leading to the establishment of immunological memory are inadequately understood, limiting the development of effective vaccines and durable antitumor immune therapies. Here, we show that ectopic OCA-B expression is sufficient to improve antiviral memory recall responses, while having minimal effects on primary effector responses. At peak viral response, short-lived effector T cell populations are expanded but show increased and expression, while memory precursor effector cells show increased expression of , and on a per-cell basis.
