Long-term studies should provide structure for inclusive education and professional development.

Long-term studies are critical for ecological understanding, but they are underutilized as inclusive opportunities for training ecologists. We use our perspective from the Año Nuevo elephant seal programme along with surveys from community members to propose that long-term studies could be better leveraged to promote inclusive education and professional development in ecology. Drawing on our experiences as mentors and mentees, we demonstrate how long-term studies can use their resources, including rich data, robust logistics and extensive professional networks, to improve recruitment and retention of diverse groups of trainees.

Systematic Review of Sex-specific High Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin I and T Thresholds.

Purpose: High-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) and T (hs-cTnT) have been demonstrated to have lower sex-specific 99th percentiles in healthy females. However, these sex-specific thresholds are not widely adopted in clinical practice which could lead to underdiagnosis of acute myocardial infarction in females. We conducted a systematic review to explore sex-specific 99th percentiles for hs-cTnI and hs-cTnT from healthy reference populations.

Maximizing biological insights from instruments attached to animals.

Instruments attached to animals ('biologgers') have facilitated extensive discoveries about the patterns, causes, and consequences of animal behavior. Here, we present examples of how biologging can deepen our fundamental understanding of ecosystems and our applied understanding of global change impacts by enabling tests of ecological theory. Applying the iterative process of science to biologging has enabled a diverse set of insights, including social and experiential learning in long-distance migrants, state-dependent risk aversion in foraging predators, and resource abundance driving movement across taxa.

Synthesis of Diverse -Trifluoromethyl Pyrazoles by Trapping of Transiently-Generated Trifluoromethylhydrazine.

A one-pot synthesis of functionalized -trifluoromethyl pyrazoles from readily available di-Boc trifluoromethylhydrazine and dialdehydes, diketones, carbonylnitriles, and ketoesters/amides/acids is described. F NMR studies were used to characterize the stability of trifluoromethylhydrazine HCl salt in solution and in solid form and identified a short solution-state half-life of ∼6 h. Optimization of cyclization conditions identified DCM, combined with a strong acid, as a key to suppress the undesired des-CF side products, which formed as a result of the instability of trifluoromethylhydrazine and related intermediates.

Recent evidence also shows that land use change affects insect traits, with intraspecific body size of pollinators changing across landscape gradients. However, the consequences on crop production of trait changes in different plant interactors have not been well-studied.

Agricultural landscape simplification affects wild plant reproduction indirectly through herbivore-mediated changes in floral display.

As natural landscapes are modified and converted into simplified agricultural landscapes, the community composition and interactions of organisms persisting in these modified landscapes are altered. While many studies examine the consequences of these changing interactions for crops, few have evaluated the effects on wild plants. Here, we examine how pollinator and herbivore interactions affect reproductive success for wild resident and phytometer plants at sites along a landscape gradient ranging from natural to highly simplified.

However, it is unclear if either the force of or the response to selection is similar across these scales. We show that natural selection drives divergence between closely related species in a pattern that is distinct from local adaptation within species.

A novel LC-MS/MS method for the determination of favipiravir ribofuranosyl-5'-triphosphate (T-705-RTP) in human peripheral mononuclear cells.

Favipiravir is a broad-spectrum antiviral that is metabolised intracellularly into the active form, favipiravir ribofuranosyl-5'-triphosphate (F-RTP). Measurement of the intracellular concentration of F-RTP in mononuclear cells is a crucial step to characterising the pharmacokinetics of F-RTP and to enable more appropriate dose selection for the treatment of COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases. The described method was validated over the range 24 - 2280 pmol/sample.

Synovial fibroblast gene expression is associated with sensory nerve growth and pain in rheumatoid arthritis.

It has been presumed that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) joint pain is related to inflammation in the synovium; however, recent studies reveal that pain scores in patients do not correlate with synovial inflammation. We developed a machine-learning approach (graph-based gene expression module identification or GbGMI) to identify an 815-gene expression module associated with pain in synovial biopsy samples from patients with established RA who had limited synovial inflammation at arthroplasty. We then validated this finding in an independent cohort of synovial biopsy samples from patients who had early untreated RA with little inflammation.

Neuronal activity rapidly reprograms dendritic translation via eIF4G2:uORF binding.

Learning and memory require activity-induced changes in dendritic translation, but which mRNAs are involved and how they are regulated are unclear. In this study, to monitor how depolarization impacts local dendritic biology, we employed a dendritically targeted proximity labeling approach followed by crosslinking immunoprecipitation, ribosome profiling and mass spectrometry. Depolarization of primary cortical neurons with KCl or the glutamate agonist DHPG caused rapid reprogramming of dendritic protein expression, where changes in dendritic mRNAs and proteins are weakly correlated.

Obstetrics and gynecology applicant perceptions of residency program culture with virtual interviews: a qualitative analysis of social media posts.

Background: In the United States, Obstetrics and Gynecology residency interviews are instrumental in assessing the compatibility between medical student applicants and residency programs during the match process. Applicant perceptions of Obstetrics and Gynecology residency culture are a key component in determining how they rank residency programs. In 2020, residency interviews transitioned to a virtual format, and little is known about how applicants evaluated program culture during this first round of universal virtual interviews.

Evidence review and considerations for use of first line genome sequencing to diagnose rare genetic disorders.

Early use of genome sequencing (GS) in the diagnostic odyssey can reduce suffering and improve care, but questions remain about which patient populations are most amenable to GS as a first-line diagnostic test. To address this, the Medical Genome Initiative conducted a literature review to identify appropriate clinical indications for GS. Studies published from January 2011 to August 2022 that reported on the diagnostic yield (DY) or clinical utility of GS were included.

The Western States Occupational Network (WestON) is a network of federal, state, and local occupational health professionals that includes a 19-state region of the United States.

Small vessel cerebrovascular disease is associated with cognition in prospective Alzheimer's clinical trial participants.

Background: Secondary prevention clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease (AD) target amyloid accumulation in asymptomatic, amyloid-positive individuals, but it is unclear to what extent other pathophysiological processes, such as small vessel cerebrovascular disease, account for participant performance on the primary cognitive outcomes in those trials. White matter hyperintensities are areas of increased signal on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that reflect small vessel cerebrovascular disease. They are associated with cognitive functioning in older adults and with clinical presentation and course of AD, particularly when distributed in posterior brain regions.

The addition of doxycycline to fluoroquinolones for bacterial prophylaxis in autologous stem cell transplantation for multiple myeloma.

Background: Bacterial prophylaxis with a fluoroquinolone (FQ) during autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) is common, although not standardized among transplant centers. The addition of doxycycline (doxy) to FQ prophylaxis was previously linked to reduced neutropenic fever and bacteremia in multiple myeloma (MM) patients undergoing ASCT although several confounders were present. We compared the incidence of neutropenic fever and bacteremia between MM patients variably receiving prophylaxis with FQ alone and FQ-doxy during ASCT.

The effects of insufficient sleep and adequate sleep on cognitive function in healthy adults.

Study Objectives: Although sleep affects a range of waking behaviors, the majority of studies have focused on sleep loss with relatively little attention on sustained periods of adequate sleep. The goal of this study was to use an experimental design to examine the effect of both of these sleep patterns on cognitive performance in healthy adults.

Methods: This study used a randomized crossover design.

Objectives: Work is an under-recognized social determinant of health. There is limited research describing US wildland firefighter (WFF) workforce demographics or how to work associates with WFF health behaviors. In this study researchers characterized a WFF cohort and tested hypotheses that WFFs used tobacco, alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) differently over the course of the fire season and that different fire crews may exhibit different behavior patterns.

Diagnostic testing and antibiotic utilization among inpatients evaluated for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia.

We evaluated diagnostic test and antibiotic utilization among 252 patients from 11 US hospitals who were evaluated for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia during the severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant pandemic wave. In our cohort, antibiotic use remained high (62%) among SARS-CoV-2-positive patients and even higher among those who underwent procalcitonin testing (68%).

Could the National Academy of Medicine's National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being work as a framework to improve the well-being of our US clinical veterinary healthcare teams?

The authors propose using the National Academy of Medicine's (NAM) National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being as a framework on which the veterinary profession can re-envision patients and clients being cared for by a veterinary workforce that is thriving, where professionals operate in an environment that fosters their occupational well-being and longevity, strives to improve animal and population health, expands and enhances the care experience, and advances animal health equity. Adapting the NAM's National Plan is intended to inspire collective action to improve the well-being of all veterinary professionals and focuses on changes needed across the profession at the organizational and systemic levels. The Plan focuses on 7 priority areas, many of which would require needed changes to the training and practice business models with input from all interested parties-including clients and the diverse communities our professionals serve.
