Objective: Oral lichen planus carries a risk for malignancy. The pathogenesis of the disease is mediated by various inflammatory mediators. Several mediators could be responsible for the oncogenic behavior in certain cases.

Use of Melatonin/Decorticotomy and Autogenous Bone Graft in Induced 1-Wall Defect.

Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the effect of intramarrow penetration (IMP) and 1% melatonin (MLN) gel on the remodelling process of autogenous bone graft (ABG) in an induced 1-osseous wall defect model.

Methods: Sixty-four intrabony induced mandibular defects were created on the distal side of premolars-P1, P2, P3, and P4 (on each side)-in 8 beagle dogs. A ligature-induced periodontitis was initiated in each defect.

Correlation of VEGF and MMP-2 levels in oral lichen planus: An in vivo immunohistochemical study.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relation between vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in different oral lichen planus (OLP) forms compared to control patients.

Methods: Biopsies from 60 patients were selected and equally distributed as follows: reticular/popular OLP (R/PLP), atrophic/erosive OLP (A/ELP) patients, healthy subjects (Control). All biopsies were immune-histochemical stained and statistically analyzed for VEGF and MMP-2 expression.

Aim Of The Study: The aim of the study was to compare the clinical outcomes, radiometric indices (antigonial index and mental index) before and after nonsurgical treatment of chronic periodontitis in postmenopausal osteoporotic women receiving alendronate (ALN) and Lepidium sativum either singly or combined.

Materials And Methods: The study was conducted on 45 postmenopausal osteoporotic women with chronic periodontitis. The study population was divided randomly and equally into three groups: A, B and C (15 patients each).

Evaluation of Adjunctive Use of Low-Level Diode Laser Biostimulation with Combined Orthodontic Regenerative Therapy.

Background: The combined orthodontic regenerative therapy approach can greatly enhance periodontal conditions and dentofacial aesthetics in many situations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 940nm low-level diode laser biostimulation in enhancement of intrabony wound healing with combined orthodontic/regenerative therapy in chronic periodontitis subjects suffering from malocclusion.

Methods: Fifteen chronic periodontitis adult patients with at least two intrabony defects and requiring orthodontic treatment for abnormalities in occlusion were included.

Background And Objectives: The success of any surgical procedure is predominately influenced by the pattern of its wound healing. The objective of the present study was to assess gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) levels during the early healing phase of root coverage procedures. MMP-8 levels on days four and seven were correlated with the wound healing index (WHI) to evaluate the presence of MMP-8 during early post-surgical wound healing after root coverage procedures.

Expression of CD163 in hereditary gingival fibromatosis: A possible association with TGF-β1.

Background: Although several studies have discussed some of the molecular and cellular changes associated with hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF), its pathogenesis is still largely unclear. This study was directed to detect and outline the degree of relationship between the immunophenotyped macrophages (M2) expressing CD163 and TGF-β1 in patients with gingival overgrowth due to HGF.

Methods: Biopsies from 20 patients suffering from HGF and 20 normal control subjects were harvested, histologically and immunohistochemically stained then, analyzed and statistically compared and correlated for CD163 immunoexpression and TGF-β1.

ALK1 expression in oral lichen planus: a possible relation to microvessel density.

Objective: To assess the expression of activin receptor-like kinase 1 (ALK1) and investigate its possible relationship with microvessel density (MVD) in different forms of oral lichen planus (OLP) compared to controls' biopsies.

Methods: Biopsies from 20 reticular/papular OLP (R/PLP), 20 atrophic/erosive OLP (A/ELP) patients, and 20 healthy subjects were immunohistochemically analyzed and statistically compared and correlated for ALK1 expression and MVD as assessed by CD34 expression.

A Novel Surgical Approach for Treatment of Class II Furcation Defects Using Marginal Periosteal Membrane.

Objectives: This study was designed to describe and evaluate the use of a vascularized marginal periosteal barrier membrane (MPM) harvested by a semilunar incision, alone or combined with a bone graft, in treatment of class II furcation defects in mandibular molars, compared to open flap debridement (OFD).

Methods: Thirty class II furcation defects in mandibular molars were randomly assigned into three equal groups: Group I included OFD, Group II included defects treated with MPM, and Group III consisted of defects treated with MPM after applying demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA). At baseline and 6-month follow-up, vertical probing depth (VPD), clinical attachment level (CAL) measurements, along with a radiographic measurement of bone height (BH), were obtained for each defect.

Objective: A clinical investigation of the potential correlation of two single-nucleotide polymorphisms at -137 (G/C) and -607 (C/A) in the promoter region of the IL-18 gene, with the susceptibility to aphthous stomatitis and Behçet's disease.

Influence of alendronate administration regimen on the final outcome of implant osseointegration in an osteoporotic model.

This study aimed to evaluate the bone response around titanium implants in osteoporotic rabbits receiving oral alendronate (ALN) for one month either simultaneously with implant placement (IP) or stopped immediately before surgery. Six weeks before IP, 34 adult female New Zealand white rabbits were submitted to intramuscular injections of dexamethasone (3 mg/kg twice a week) to induce osteoporosis-like conditions. Two animals were sacrificed and histological examinations of their leg bones were performed to confirm the osteoporosis-like condition, as compared to a healthy animal.

Topical pimecrolimus effect on Fas inducing apoptosis in oral lichen planus: a clinical immunohistochemical study.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of pimecrolimus treatment in patients not responding to corticosteroid treatment and to investigate its effect on Fas expression on keratinocytes in oral lichen planus (OLP).

Subjects And Methods: Twenty patients with OLP were recruited from the Oral Medicine Clinic at the School of Dentistry, Ain Shams University, Egypt. Pimecrolimus 1% cream with a hydrophilic adhesive gel base was applied to the oral lesions, four times daily, for a total of 2 months.
