Introduction: (), one of the most prevalent blue-green algae in aquatic environments, produces microcystin by causing harmful algal blooms (HAB). This study investigated the combined effects of nutrients and cyanobacterial subpopulation competition on synthesizing microcystin-LR.

Method: In varied nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, cyanobacterial coculture, and algicidal DCMU presence, the growth was monitored by optical density analysis or microscopic counting, and the microcystin production was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-UV.

Kinetic modeling of biochemical reactions and bioreactor systems can enhance and quantify knowledge gained from cell culture experiments and has many applications in bioprocess design and optimization. The Microbial and Algal Growth Modeling Application (MAGMA) is a user-friendly MATLAB-based software for streamlining the development of kinetic models for various bioreactor systems. This study details the MAGMA workflow by demonstrating the creation of kinetic models with systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), model fitting by solving inverse problems, statistical evaluation of model fitting quality, and visual display of simulation results.

The response of the phenological events of individual species to climate change is not isolated, but is connected through interaction with other species at the same or adjacent trophic level. Using long-term phenological data observed since 1976 in Korea, whose temperature has risen more steeply than the average global temperature, this study conducted phenological analysis (differ-ences in the phenology of groups, differences in phenological shifts due to climate change, differ-ences in phenological sensitivity to climate by groups, and the change of phenological day differ-ences among interacting groups). The phenological shift of the producer group (plants) was found to be negative in all researched species, which means that it blooms quickly over the years.

We previously showed that 5-HT(3) receptors are involved in the development and expression of methamphetamine (MAP)-induced locomotor sensitization in mice. Here, we examined whether the dopaminergic or the GABAergic systems are involved in the attenuating effects of the 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist MDL72222 on MAP-induced locomotor sensitization. Quantitative autoradiography of D1 ([(3)H]SCH23390), D2 ([(3)H]raclopride) receptor, and GABA(A) receptor benzodiazepine ([(3)H]flunitrazepam) binding was carried out in the brains of mice treated with chronic MAP and pretreatment with MDL72222.

3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) is a food processing contaminant in a wide range of foods and ingredients and is a suspected cause of cancer. In this study, the 13-week toxicity of 3-MCPD was examined in B6C3F1 mice (10/sex/group) administered 3-MCPD doses of 0, 5, 25, 100, 200 and 400 ppm dissolved in their drinking water over a 13-week period.
