Background: Despite more women entering medicine, substantial gender disparities remain in various medical disciplines. This study explores the extent of these disparities in Canadian academic internal medicine, particularly in academic ranks, leadership positions, and research productivity.
Design: Cross-sectional.
Unlabelled: Indonesia situated within the volatile Ring of Fire, faces recurring and devastating earthquakes that pose significant economic threats. The Government of Indonesia (GoI) has initiated a disaster risk financing strategy to address these challenges. However, the implementation of disaster insurance within this strategy remains limited.

Methods: Key performance indicators, formulated as the percentage of patients achieving the KDIGO (2012) guideline-recommended targets for hemoglobin (Hb) (11-12 g/dl), transferrin saturation (TSAT) (20-40%) and serum ferritin (200-500 ng/ml), were reported quarterly over the 18-month-period of this study.
Tumors occurring in the submandibular space are infrequent among pediatric patients, and benign peripheral nerve tumors in this region are exceptionally rare. This study describes the uncommon occurrence of a schwannoma in the submandibular space in a child and describes its management. A 7-year-old child presented with a gradually enlarging swelling over a 7-month period in the submandibular region, clinically resembling a salivary gland tumor.

We aim to address this unmet need by using a proprietary computational drug discovery platform that identifies drug candidates with the potential to advance rapidly and successfully through preclinical studies.
Methods: We generated an in silico model of HCC biology to identify the top 10 small molecules with predicted efficacy.

The steady increase in smoking rates has led to a call for wide-reaching and scalable interventions for smoking cessation in Qatar. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of an evidence-based smoking cessation program delivered by telephone for Qatari residents. A total of 248 participants were recruited through primary care centers and received five weekly scheduled proactive behavioral counseling calls from personnel trained in tobacco cessation and navigation to obtain cessation pharmacotherapy from clinics.

The management of thyroid carcinoma with infiltration to the aerodigestive tract has been widely discussed with no consensus regarding the best surgical technique. Complete surgical resection is the aim of the surgery.

This study examines factors associated with baseline self-efficacy among treatment seeking participants enrolled in a pilot feasibility smoking cessation study. Participants (n = 247) were daily male smokers, residents of Doha in Qatar (18-60 years) who were enrolled in a telephone-based smoking cessation study.

An examination of the human gait is feasible using inertial sensing. The embedded accelerometer and gyroscope in an inertial measurement unit can evaluate physical activity-based sports and this unit is relatively affordable compared to global positioning systems or video recording quantification. This study developed a cost-effective sports monitoring investigation method with an inertial sensor attached to the right leg of the athletes.

Here, we describe the prevalence of AL in a series of children presenting with aerodigestive symptoms and explore its association with functional abnormalities, congenital and structural anomalies or conditions.
Setting: Tertiary paediatric centre.
Background: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) typically found in the trunk, limbs, head, and neck represent 3-10% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. Although they typically originating from peripheral nerve Schwann cells, 2-3% arise from the spinal nerves and may be found within the spinal canal. Here, we present a 43-year-old male with an extradural thoracic MPNST contributing to marked cord compression and a progressive paraparesis.

The aim of this scoping review was to assess and critically appraise current literature on the effect of these bioactive citrus peel compounds on breast cancer in human trials and to identify knowledge gaps for exploration in future studies.
Methods: This study followed a scoping review framework.

In Qatar, tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death and disease. Telephone-based interventions for smoking are cost-effective and scalable interventions that are effective in promoting smoking behavior change. While many countries have implemented these services within their tobacco control programs, there is a distinct dearth of a telephone-based smoking cessation intervention that is adapted and tailored to meet the needs of people who smoke in Qatar.

Background: Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is endemic in healthcare settings in Indonesia.
Aim: To evaluate the effect of a bundle of preventive measures on the transmission and acquisition of MRSA in a surgical ward of a resource-limited hospital in Indonesia.
Methods: The study consisted of a pre-intervention (7 months), intervention (2 months), and post-intervention phase (5 months) and included screening for MRSA among eligible patients, healthcare workers (HCWs), and the hospital environment.
Background: More than five decades ago, thalassemia major (TDT) was fatal in the first decade of life. Survival and quality of life have improved progressively thanks to the implementation of a significant advance in diagnostic and therapeutic methods, consisting mainly of a frequent transfusion program combined with intensive chelation therapy. Improvement also includes imaging methods used to measure liver and cardiac iron overload.
