The short-term protective effects of lycopene on renal ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

Objective: Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury may occur due to nephron-sparing surgery in patients with a solitary kidney or restricted renal parenchymas. Prophylactic agents do not always achieve their intended effects and may exhibit side effects. The present study was designed to investigate the possible protective effects of lycopene against hypoxia-induced renal damage.

Development of a quality of life scale specific for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Purpose: The improvement of quality of life (QoL) should be the major concern in any proposed treatment modality for any disorder. The objective of this study was to develop a new easy to use benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)-specific QoL scale that may guide the treatment policy in BPH.

Methods: A total of 118 items addressing BPH-specific QoL were produced.

Acute urinary retention in a child caused by a congenital bladder diverticulum.

Acute urinary retention is an uncommon diagnosis in childhood, and is associated with a variety of causes. Congenital bladder diverticula, occurring almost exclusively in boys, is not a rare entity. However, acute urinary retention is an extremely rare complication of congenital bladder diverticulum.

The BTA stat test is nonspecific for hematuria: an experimental hematuria model.

Purpose: An experimental hematuria model was designed to determine whether the bladder tumor antigen (BTA) stat test (Bion Diagnostics, Redmond, Washington) is influenced by microscopic or macroscopic hematuria.

Materials And Methods: A total of 25 healthy subjects provided urine and blood samples for the study. All subjects had a negative BTA stat test initially.
