Immunoglobulins (Igs) are produced by B lymphocytes and play a key role in humoral immunity. Igs are classified into five isotypes (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD). Their primary function is to recognize and bind to foreign antigens.

Assessment of the Trends and Factors Associated With Unintended Pregnancy Among Women of Reproductive Age: An Analysis of the Nigerian Demographic Health Survey Between 2008 to 2018.

Background: Unintended pregnancy is a global public health issue with significant adverse effects which include health and economic consequences. Globally, there were 121 million unintended pregnancies annually between 2015 and 2019 among women of reproductive age between 15 and 49 mainly due to the non-uptake of modern contraceptives, harmful norms, stigma and lack of sexual and reproductive health care and information.

Methods: We extracted information from the Nigeria Demographic Health Survey conducted in 2008, 2013, and 2018 to assess the trends and factors associated with unintended pregnancies among women of reproductive-aged 15-49.

Using the Family Planning Estimation Tool (FPET) to assess national-level family planning trends and future projections for contraceptive prevalence and associated demand for HIV-infected women in sub-Saharan Africa.

The combination of low uptake of modern contraceptives, high rates of unintended pregnancies, and the pervasive HIV epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) poses a threat to maternal, newborn, and child health in the region. This study examined the prevalence, need, and demand satisfied by modern contraceptive methods for women who tested positive for HIV (both unmarried and married) in 10 countries in SSA. We used the Family Planning Estimation Tool (FPET) to generate national-level trends and projections from 1983 through 2030.

Retentive force and dislodgment time variations between three implant overdenture stud attachments in an acidic environment: An in-vitro pilot study.

Introduction: This in-vitro study aimed to evaluate the retentive force and dislodgment time of three stud attachment systems used for mandibular two-implant overdentures by simulating insertion/removal cycles.

Materials And Methods: From a simulation of a completely edentulous mandible with two parallel implants (Ø4.5 mm internal hex connection) (Zimmer Biomet, Warsaw, IN), 15 resin bases were fabricated and divided into three groups (n = 5 each): OT Equator (Rhein83, Bologna, IT), Locator (Zest Dental Solutions, Escondido, CA) and Locator R-Tx (Zest Dental Solutions, Escondido, CA).

Is intimate partner violence vertically transmitted among women in sub-Saharan Africa? Evidence from demographic health surveys between 2010 and 2019.

Background: Violence against women is a major human rights violation, and the continuous occurrence of this can have many implications for women's social and health outcomes. The experience of violence from an intimate partner could be more intriguing, especially if such women experienced their mother's intimate partner violence (IPV) issues. Thus, this study examined the vertical transmission of IPV among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Costs of purchase, maintenance, microbiological control, and reprocessing of a reusable duodenoscope.

The costs of reusable endoscope reprocessing have been evaluated, yet external validity of the findings remains challenging. The aim of this study was to assess the costs of purchase, maintenance, microbiological control, and reprocessing of a reusable duodenoscope per endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in France. Study findings exclude the costs of infection, downtime due to breakdown, reprocessing single-use material disposal, and device disposal, all of which should also be considered.

Multiple high-risk fertility behaviours and children under five mortality survivors among ever-married women of reproductive age in Nigeria.

Background: Multiple high-risk fertility behaviours (MHRFBs), including maternal age < 18 or > 34 years old, a birth order 4+, and birth spacing < 24 months, can directly or indirectly affect survival outcomes among under-five children. There is a dearth of available information and data about these two phenomena in Nigeria. Thus, this study evaluates the prevalence of MHRFBs and examines the association between MHRFBs and under-five mortality survival (U5M) outcomes among ever-married women of reproductive age in Nigeria.

T-cell receptor beta variable gene polymorphism predicts immune-related adverse events during checkpoint blockade immunotherapy.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized cancer treatment. However, they are associated with a unique spectrum of side effects, called immune-related adverse events (irAEs), which can cause significant morbidity and quickly progress to severe or life-threatening events if not treated promptly. Identifying predictive biomarkers for irAEs before immunotherapy initiation is therefore a critical area of research.

Evaluation of the accuracy of new modalities in the assessment and classification of lumbar lordosis: A comparison to Cobb's angle measurement.

Background: Because of the association of lumbar lordosis with some clinical conditions such as low back pain, the chiropractic field has emphasized the significance of evaluating the lumbar lordotic status, by measuring Cobb's angle, regarded as the radiological gold standard, for the assessment of lumbar lordosis, on lateral radiographs. However, research has shown that this technique has some considerable drawbacks, mostly in terms of low accuracy and high variability between clinicians when compared with other radiological modalities. The main objective was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of newly established radiological measurements with one of Cobb's angle methods, for the characterization of lumbar lordosis status in a sample of Lebanese patients aged 15 and above.

Common Variable Immunodeficiency Patient Fecal Microbiota Transplant Recapitulates Gut Dysbiosis.

Purpose: Patients with non-infectious complications have worse clinical outcomes in common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) than those with infections-only. Non-infectious complications are associated with gut microbiome aberrations, but there are no reductionist animal models that emulate CVID. Our aim in this study was to uncover potential microbiome roles in the development of non-infectious complications in CVID.

Sexual and reproductive health and rights in humanitarian settings: a matter of life and death.

It is estimated that approximately 4.3 million sexually active persons worldwide will receive poor and/or limited access to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in their lifetime. Globally, approximately 200 million women and girls still endure female genital cutting, 33,000 child marriages occur daily, and a myriad of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) agenda gaps continue to remain unaddressed.

The role of low-carbohydrate diets in the intensive care unit.

Low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) nutrition therapy is characterized by carbohydrates comprising <26% of the daily caloric intake and a higher proportion of fat. LCHF therapies reduce exogenous glucose load, improve glycemic control, decrease inflammation, and improve clinical outcomes such as respiratory function. Given the altered metabolism in critically ill patients, LCHF nutrition therapy may be especially beneficial as it enables the conservation of protein and glucose for metabolic roles beyond energy use.

Each year, over 200 million women globally cannot prevent pregnancy through modern contraceptive methods, with 70-80% of these women residing in sub-Saharan Africa. Consequently, almost 50% of pregnancies are unintended and 35 million unsafe abortions occur annually in the region. Further, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest burden globally of Human Immune-Deficiency Virus (HIV) infection, and over 57% of those affected are women.

Neuron-specific protein network mapping of autism risk genes identifies shared biological mechanisms and disease-relevant pathologies.

There are hundreds of risk genes associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but signaling networks at the protein level remain unexplored. We use neuron-specific proximity-labeling proteomics (BioID2) to identify protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks for 41 ASD risk genes. Neuron-specific PPI networks, including synaptic transmission proteins, are disrupted by de novo missense variants.

Role of antiseptics in the prevention and treatment of infections in nursing homes.

Inadequate infection control, wound care, and oral hygiene protocols in nursing homes pose challenges to residents' quality of life. Based on the outcomes from a focus group meeting and a literature search, this narrative review evaluates the current and potential roles of antiseptics within nursing home infection management procedures. We examine contemporary strategies and concerns within the management of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA; including decolonization regimes), chronic wound care, and oral hygiene, and review the available data for the use of antiseptics, with a focus on povidone-iodine.

Pediatric Eosinophilia: A Review and Multiyear Investigation into Etiologies.

Objectives: To identify the etiology of peripheral eosinophilia in a large pediatric population and to develop a diagnostic algorithm to help guide diagnosis and management of peripheral eosinophilia in the outpatient pediatric population.

Study Design: We performed a retrospective chart review of children presenting to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston with peripheral eosinophilia between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2019. Eosinophilia was classified as mild (absolute eosinophil count [AEC] >500 and <1500 cells/μL), moderate (AEC >1500 and <4500 cells/μL), or severe (AEC >4500 cells/μL).

Risk Factors of Pneumonia in Primary Antibody Deficiency Patients Receiving Immunoglobulin Therapy: Data from the US Immunodeficiency Network (USIDNET).

Background: Despite immunoglobulin replacement (IgRT) therapy, some patients with primary antibody deficiency (PAD) continue to develop respiratory infections. Recurrent and severe respiratory infections, particularly pneumonia, can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Therefore, we sought to determine the risk factors of developing pneumonia in PAD patients, already receiving IgRT.

Implementation of a Novel Web-Based Lesion Selection Tool to Improve Acquisition of Tumor Biopsy Specimens.

Introduction: For maximum utility of molecular characterization by next-generation sequencing (NGS) and better understanding of tumor microenvironment with immune correlates analysis, biopsy specimens must yield adequate tumor tissue, and sequential biopsy specimens should sample a consistent site. We developed a web-based lesion selection tool (LST) that enables management and tracking of the biopsy specimen collections.

Methods: Of 145 patients, the LST was used for 88 patients; the other 57 served as controls.

Rubella Virus Infected Macrophages and Neutrophils Define Patterns of Granulomatous Inflammation in Inborn and Acquired Errors of Immunity.

Rubella virus (RuV) has recently been found in association with granulomatous inflammation of the skin and several internal organs in patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI). The cellular tropism and molecular mechanisms of RuV persistence and pathogenesis in select immunocompromised hosts are not clear. We provide clinical, immunological, virological, and histological data on a cohort of 28 patients with a broad spectrum of IEI and RuV-associated granulomas in skin and nine extracutaneous tissues to further delineate this relationship.

Immune System in Action.

Tumor exists as a complex network of structures with an ability to evolve and evade the host immune surveillance mechanism. The immune milieu which includes macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, neutrophils, mast cells, B cells, and T cells is found in the core, the invasive margin, or the adjacent stromal or lymphoid component of the tumor. The immune infiltrate is heterogeneous and varies within a patient and between patients of the same tumor histology.

Case Report: Dupilumab Successfully Controls Severe Eczema in a Child With Elevated IgE Levels and Recurrent Skin Infections.

The efficacy of dupilumab in pediatric patients with severe eczema presenting in the setting of elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and recurrent bacterial skin infections is not well-understood. Here we present the case of a child with elevated IgE levels in whom dupilumab treatment led to remarkable control of his eczema and recurrent skin infections. We also review the use of dupilumab in other patients with molecularly proven cases of hyper IgE (HIGE) syndrome.
