Nationwide trends and outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention for stable ischemic heart disease in end-stage kidney disease: a longitudinal study.

Background: Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are at high risk for coronary artery disease. We investigate the trends and outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for stable ischemic heart disease (SIHD) in patients with ESKD.

Methods: We utilized the United States Renal Data System [2010-2018] to include adult patients with ESKD on dialysis for at least 3 months who underwent PCI for SIHD.

Prognostic Value of Hospital Frailty Risk Score and Clinical Outcomes in Critical Limb-Threatening Ischemia and End-Stage Kidney Disease.

Background: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is commonly associated with critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and frailty. Yet there are no specific tools to predict outcomes of CLTI in ESKD, particularly those that incorporate frailty. We aimed to assess the utility of the medical record-based Hospital Frailty Risk (HFR) score in predicting outcomes of CLTI in ESKD.

Incidental Finding of Triple Ectopic Thyroid: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare congenital anomaly, with the presence of three simultaneous ectopic foci being exceedingly rare. We describe a case of a totally asymptomatic 26-year-old male discovered to have triple ectopic thyroid following incidental elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Subsequent ultrasonography of the neck showed an absent thyroid gland in its conventional location.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy as a First Step Procedure for Oncologic Purposes: An Indication Beyond the Updated Guidelines.

Background: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for cancer. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is established as a safe procedure providing accelerated weight loss and comorbidity improvement or remission. Additionally, it is approved as a bridging procedure for various non-oncologic surgeries, with very limited data for oncologic procedures.

Establishment and Comprehensive Molecular Characterization of an Immortalized Glioblastoma Cell Line from a Brazilian Patient.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, with few effective treatment strategies. The research on the development of new treatments is often constrained by the limitations of preclinical models, which fail to accurately replicate the disease's essential characteristics. DagSim: Combining DAG-based model structure with unconstrained data types and relations for flexible, transparent, and modularized data simulation.

Data simulation is fundamental for machine learning and causal inference, as it allows exploration of scenarios and assessment of methods in settings with full control of ground truth. Directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) are well established for encoding the dependence structure over a collection of variables in both inference and simulation settings. However, while modern machine learning is applied to data of an increasingly complex nature, DAG-based simulation frameworks are still confined to settings with relatively simple variable types and functional forms.

Phenotype Prevalence and Health-Related Quality of Life of Lebanese Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders. Our study aimed to assess, for the first time, the phenotype prevalence and the health-related quality of life of Lebanese women with PCOS.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 322 Lebanese women with PCOS, using a questionnaire containing sociodemographic data, comorbidities, disease-related clinical questions, and the validated PCOS questionnaire (PCOSQ).

Single nCounter assay for prediction of MYCN amplification and molecular classification of medulloblastomas: a multicentric study.

Purpose: Medulloblastoma is the most frequent pediatric malignant brain tumor, and is divided into four main subgroups: WNT, SHH, group 3, and group 4. MYCN amplification is an important medulloblastoma prognostic biomarker. We aimed to molecular classify and predict MYCN amplification in a single assay.

Gastroesophageal Cancer After Gastric Bypass Surgeries: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Data comparing the occurrence of gastroesophageal cancer after gastric bypass procedures are lacking and are only available in the form of case reports. We perform in this study a systematic review and a meta-analysis of all the reported cases of gastroesophageal cancer following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and loop gastric bypass-one anastomosis gastric bypass/mini gastric bypass (LGB-OAGB/MGB). We conducted a systematic review of all the reported cases in articles referenced in PubMed/Medline, Cochrane, and Scholar Google.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma: an update.

Malignant mesotheliomas are rare types of cancers that affect the mesothelial surfaces, usually the pleura and peritoneum. They are associated with asbestos exposure, but due to a latency period of more than 30 years and difficult diagnosis, most cases are not detected until they reach advanced stages. Treatment options for this tumor type are very limited and survival ranges from 12 to 36 months.

Intertrochanteric fractures treated by diaphyseal support arthroplasty with hook plate vs cerclage wires only: A retrospective cohort study.

Background: The treatment of unstable fractures of the intertrochanteric region of the hip in the elderly is controversial. Genome-wide translation patterns in gliomas: An integrative view.

Gliomas are the most frequent tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) and include the highly malignant glioblastoma (GBM). Characteristically, gliomas have translational control deregulation related to overactivation of signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT/mTORC1 and Ras/ERK1/2. Thus, mRNA translation appears to play a dominant role in glioma gene expression patterns.

ST segment elevation caused by ostial right coronary artery obstruction in infective endocarditis: a case report.

Background: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a rare, but serious complication of infective endocarditis, and diagnosis can be challenging given clinical overlap with other syndromes. A rare cause of ACS in infective endocarditis is mechanical obstruction of the coronary artery. We present the case of a patient with infective endocarditis who developed ST segment myocardial infarction due to occlusion of the right coronary artery ostium by a vegetation.

The Ischial Spine in Developmental Hip Dysplasia: Unraveling the Role of Acetabular Retroversion in Periacetabular Osteotomy.

Purpose: Radiological diagnosis of acetabular retroversion (AR) is based on the presence of the crossover sign (COS), the posterior wall sign (PWS), and the prominence of the ischial spine sign (PRISS). The primary purpose of the study is to analyze the clinical significance of the PRISS in a sample of dysplastic hips requiring periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) and evaluate retroversion in symptomatic hip dysplasia.

Methods: In a previous paper, we reported the classic coxometric measurements of 178 patients with symptomatic hip dysplasia undergoing PAO where retroversion was noted in 42% of the cases and was not found to be a major factor in the appearance of symptoms.

Bilateral subtrochanteric insufficiency fracture following mini-gastric bypass. A case report.

Insufficiency fractures are a common complication of bisphosphonate use and have recently been reported in association with Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery (RYGB). This study reports a case of a 62-year-old female, 6 years status post Mini Gastric Bypass - One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (MGB-OAGB), presenting to our institution with bilateral groin pain of 8 months duration unresponsive to conservative management. Diagnostic workup revealed bilateral medial sub-trochanteric insufficiency fractures.

Sacral Anatomical Orientation in the Lebanese Population.

Introduction: PI is currently used as the gold standard measurement in spinopelvic anatomy. There is a need for a reliable method to calculate sacral anatomic orientation (SAO) independent of posture and to establish its association with PI, which was previously established in a single study (Peleg et al., 2007).

High intensity interval training combined with L-citrulline supplementation: Effects on physical performance in healthy older adults.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of citrulline (CIT) supplementation combined to high intensity interval training (HIIT) on physical performance in healthy older adults.

Methods: This study is a secondary analysis from a double-blind, randomized trial. Among the participants (sedentary & inactive older adults aged over 65 yrs), 44 were non obese (BMI <30 kg/m) and completed the intervention: Placebo + HIIT (PLA; n = 21) or CIT + HIIT (n = 23).

Germline Mutation in Resulting in Impaired Protein Stability is Associated with Familial Breast and Thyroid Cancer.

Multiple primary thyroid cancer (TC) and breast cancer (BC) are commonly diagnosed, and the lifetime risk for these cancers is increased in patients with a positive family history of both TC and BC. Although this phenotype is partially explained by or mutations, a significant number of patients are negative for these alterations. We judiciously recruited patients diagnosed with BC and/or TC having a family history of these tumors and assessed their whole-exome sequencing.
