Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between metabolic drugs (like those for diabetes and cholesterol) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the Lebanese population, utilizing data from a nationwide survey of 2048 participants.
  • Key findings indicate that factors such as higher adherence to the Lebanese Mediterranean Diet, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, family history of CVD, and smoking habits are associated with an increased risk of CVD, while higher income levels appear to lower this risk.
  • Interestingly, the study found that neither hypoglycemic nor lipid-lowering medications had a significant impact on CVD risk, though lifestyle and socio-economic status played notable roles in different patient subgroups.

Introduction And Importance: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common primary renal malignancy in patients between the ages of 50 and 70. A rare described variant of RCC is transcription factor for immunoglobulin heavy-chain enhancer 3 (TFE3) rearranged RCC. Osseous metaplasia, which refers to the occurrence of normal bone tissue in soft tissue, has been observed in all subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC); however, only three previous case reports have documented the occurrence of osseous metaplasia in TFE3-rearranged RCC.

A 38-year-old motor vehicle accident victim presented for acute urinary retention due to a clogged Foley catheter, which was inserted two weeks prior during surgery for pelvic and spine fixation and extra-peritoneal bladder rupture. Imaging studies revealed persistent bladder leaks despite primary and, later, secondary surgical repair. A combination of novel non-surgical techniques, that is, urinary diversion, negative pressure dressings, and waiting proved beneficial in our case, and led ultimately to complete clinical and radiological resolution of the fistula.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 ω3) may be involved in various neuroprotective mechanisms that could prevent Alzheimer's disease (AD). Its influence has still been little explored regarding the dysfunction of the endolysosomal pathway, known as an early key event in the physiopathological continuum triggering AD. This dysfunction could result from the accumulation of degradation products of the precursor protein of AD, in particular the C99 fragment, capable of interacting with endosomal proteins and thus contributing to altering this pathway from the early stages of AD.

Urine samples of female patients with overactive bladder (OAB) are characterized by low levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) and elevated concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) compared to healthy controls. We therefore examined how NO might regulate NGF synthesis using rat bladder smooth muscle (SMCs) and urothelial (UROs) cells in culture. In UROs, incubation in hyperglycemic conditions to mimic insulin insensitivity present in the OAB cohort increased secretion of NO and concomitantly decreased NGF, except when the NO synthase inhibitor, l-NAME (1 mM) was present.
