Case report: Malignant struma ovarii.

Struma ovarii are specialized teratomas consisting of thyroid tissue with various microscopic features, ranging from benign to malignant. We report a rare form of malignant struma ovarii, composed exclusively of a follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma with capsular invasion, which occurred in a 65-yr-old woman.

Transforming growth factor-beta1 accelerates bone bonding to a blended calcium phosphate ceramic coating: a dose-response study.

In vivo strain measurements can facilitate the study of the bone remodeling response to loading and load changes. Calcium phosphate ceramic (CPC) coatings have been used to attach strain gauges to bone for extended periods of time, but require up to 12 weeks for adequate CPC-to-bone bonding. Significance of linear extent of breast carcinoma at surgical margin.

Background: Our objective was to correlate the extent of margin positivity and the findings on re-excision specimens of infiltrating mammary carcinoma.

Methods: We selected 50 consecutive cases of infiltrating mammary carcinoma, including both infiltrating ductal carcinoma and infiltrating lobular carcinoma, with positive margins followed by re-excision. Margin positivity was defined as the presence of cancer at the inked margin.

We report the occurrence of bilateral angiosarcoma after radiation therapy for breast carcinoma in a 64 yr-old woman. The first angiosarcoma developed 17 yr after radiation therapy to the right breast; the second angiosarcoma developed 1.5 yr after radiation therapy to the left breast.

The Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project: description of a multi-institutional collaboration to identify environmental risk factors for breast cancer.

The Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project is a federally mandated, population-based case-control study to determine whether breast cancer risk among women in the counties of Nassau and Suffolk, NY, is associated with selected environmental exposures, assessed by blood samples, self-reports, and environmental home samples. This report describes the collaborative project's background, rationale, methods, participation rates, and distributions of known risk factors for breast cancer by case-control status, by blood donation, and by availability of environmental home samples. Interview response rates among eligible cases and controls were 82.

Environmental toxins and breast cancer on Long Island. II. Organochlorine compound levels in blood.

Whether environmental contaminants increase breast cancer risk among women on Long Island, NY, is unknown. The study objective is to determine whether breast cancer risk is increased in relation to organochlorines, compounds with known estrogenic characteristics that were extensively used on Long Island and other areas of the United States. Recent reports do not support a strong association, although there are concerns with high risks observed in subgroups of women.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are potent mammary carcinogens in rodents, but their effect on breast cancer development in women is not clear. To examine whether currently measurable PAH damage to DNA increases breast cancer risk, a population-based case-control study was undertaken on Long Island, NY. Cases were women newly diagnosed with in situ and invasive breast cancer; controls were randomly selected women frequency matched to the age distribution of cases.

Sebaceous carcinoma of the lung: histologic and immunohistochemical characterization of an unusual pulmonary neoplasm: report of a case and review of the literature.

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis presenting as a parotid gland mass is extremely rare. We report a case of Langerhans' cell histiocytosis in the parotid gland that occurred in a 34-year-old Korean male. The patient underwent parotidectomy followed by adjuvant chemotherapy.

Liposarcoma in the bone marrow: a terminal event.

We report a case of metastatic liposarcoma in the bone marrow with a rapidly fatal course. In view of the poor prognosis and paucity of clinical and imaging findings in patients with high-grade liposarcoma that is metastatic to bone marrow, we propose that bone marrow examination should be performed during the patient's initial evaluation as well as follow-up examinations.
