Groundwater pollution risk evaluation is an important basis for developing groundwater protection measures and management strategies, and its accuracy directly affects the effectiveness of protection measures. The heterogeneity of the aquifer significantly affects the transport process of pollutants, increasing the uncertainty of pollutant risk assessment. However, in the actual site, borehole data that reveal aquifer heterogeneity are costly, and only a limited number of borehole data are available, which cannot accurately describe the heterogeneity of the aquifer, thus limiting the accuracy of groundwater pollution risk assessment.

The impacts of straw removal on rice Cd absorption, behaviour of Cd and microbial community in rhizosphere soil were investigated in paddy fields over two consecutive seasons. The results of the experiments in two fields revealed that straw removal promoted the transformation of soil Cd from acid-extractable and oxidisable fraction to residual fraction and reduced soil DTPA-Cd content with the reduction in DOC and Cd ions in soil porewater, thereby decreasing Cd content in rice. Understanding the intricate interplay between Cd accumulation in plants and their rhizosphere micro-characteristics is important for the selection of plant species with profitable Cd phytoextraction and soil remediation efficiencies. This study investigated the differences in rhizosphere micro-ecological characteristics and Cd accumulation in chicory, Ixeris polycephala, sunflower, and Sedum alfredii in low-moderate Cd-contaminated soil. Data reveal that the dominant organic acids in rhizosphere soil that responded to Cd were oxalic and lactic acids in chicory and Ixeris polycephala, tartaric acid in sunflower, and succinic acid in Sedum alfredii.
