Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease in old age, early diagnosis will help to delay the progression of the disease. Presently, the features of brain functional diseases can be obtained with EEG analysis, but the relationship between characteristics of EEG and Alzheimer's disease has not been clearly clarified. In this work, we hypothesize that there exist default brain variables (latent factors) across subjects in disease processes, decoding latent factor from brain activity contributes to the study of cognitive impairment.

The formation of biofilms by clinical pathogens typically leads to chronic and recurring antibiotic-resistant infections. High cellular levels of cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP), a ubiquitous secondary messenger of bacteria, have been proven to be associated with a sessile biofilm lifestyle of pathogens. A promising antibiofilm strategy involving the induction of c-di-GMP to form dysfunctional G-quadruplexes, thereby blocking the c-di-GMP-mediated biofilm regulatory pathway, was proposed in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in mothers and their fetuses, as PUFAs are crucial for fetal brain and retina development.
  • The meta-analysis included 24 observational studies with 4,335 maternal datasets and 12 studies with 1,675 fetal datasets, finding significant differences in PUFA levels between mothers with GDM and those without.
  • Results showed that while maternal plasma/serum levels of certain PUFAs were higher in GDM mothers, those in maternal erythrocyte membranes and fetal cord blood were lower, indicating GDM may hinder effective PUFA transfer to the fetus.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is aggressive and has poor clinical outcomes because of typically delayed diagnosis and a lack of effective non-surgical therapeutic options. Recent studies have shown that plasmalemma vesicle-associated protein (PLVAP) is related to angiogenesis in various tumors, and in vivo PLVAP targeting therapy has been proven effective against hepatocellular carcinoma and pancreatic cancer. The goal of this study was to determine the potential therapeutic utility of targeting PLVAP and thus angiogenesis in CCA and explore the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which typically disrupt the bacterial wall prompting leakage or lysis of the cell, form a growing contingent in the arsenal against antibiotic resistant bacteria. The effectiveness of AMPs is, however, hampered by their low solubility, general chemical and physical instability, and short half-life in vivo. Lipid nanocarriers such as cubosomes are effective at encapsulating and protecting proteins while simultaneously showing promise in delivery applications.

Memory loss is the most common clinical sign in Alzheimer's disease (AD); thus, searching for peripheral biomarkers to predict cognitive decline is promising for early diagnosis of AD. As platelets share similarities to neuron biology, it may serve as a peripheral matrix for biomarkers of neurological disorders. Here, we conducted a comprehensive and in-depth platelet proteomic analysis using TMT-LC-MS/MS in the populations with mild cognitive impairment (MCI, MMSE = 18-23), severe cognitive impairments (AD, MMSE = 2-17), and the age-/sex-matched normal cognition controls (MMSE = 29-30).
