The widespread use of insecticides is known to cause resurgence in Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) populations, a serious insect pest of rice, Orzya sativa L., crops in Asia. The current study investigated insecticide-induced changes in protein, RNA, and DNA levels in the ovary and fat body of adult female N.

Southeastern Australia is situated in a temperate zone with generally mild winters. The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L., can be a serious pest of canola as well as of other Brassica crops in this region.

Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) is a typical vascular feeder, primarily sucking the phloem sap of host plants. Its feeding on rice, Oryza sativa L., plants changes the pattern of allocation of assimilates between roots and shoots, and the root:shoot (R/S) ratio of assimilates is often measured as an index of physiological responses to N.

To evaluate the relationship between reproduction and migratory flight, we examined ovaries, tethered flight, and egg laying in the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner). Ovarian development in female S. exigua was classified into five stages in relation to the postemergence age of the moths.

The distribution of imidacloprid residue in different parts of rice, Oryza sativa L. (Graminales: Poaceae), plants was investigated for three rice varieties. Changes in larval hormones in Chilo suppressalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) that fed on imidacloprid-treated plant sources and the fecundity of resultant adult females (moths) also were determined.

Headspace volatiles from apple-bearing twigs were collected in the field with a Radiello sampler during three different diurnal periods over the complete fruit growing season. Analyses by thermal desorption-GC-MS identified a total of 62 compounds in changing quantities, including the terpenoids alpha-pinene, camphene, beta-pinene, limonene, beta-caryophyllene and (E,E)-alpha-farnesene, the aldehydes (E)-2-hexenal, benzaldehyde and nonanal, and the alcohol (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. The variations in emission of these plant odours were statistically related to temperature, humidity and rainfall in the field.

The effect of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Homoptera: Delphacidae), infestation on the content of zeatin ribosides (ZR) in rice plants was investigated with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Hydroponics experiments were conducted on 'Zhendao 2' rice, in which plants were subjected to N. lugens infestation at three nonhopperburn-causing densities (15, 30, and 60 nymphs per hill) for 2, 4, 6, and 8 d and at one hopperburn-causing density (240 nymphs per hill) for 2, 4, and 6 d, respectively.

This study investigated the uptake of three macronutrients, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), by rice roots in response to different infestation levels of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Homoptera: Delphacidae). Hydroponics experiments were conducted on the rice variety 'Zhendao 2' (moderately resistant to Tryporyza incertulas, Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and the variety 'Xiushui 63' (susceptible to N. lugens).

Antixenosis and antibiosis in the resistance of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to the melon thrips, Thrips palmi Karny, were investigated under laboratory and field conditions. Experiments were conducted for four moderately resistant genotypes ('Brunca', BH-130, EMP 486, and FEB 115) in comparison with one susceptible genotype (APN 18).

Resistance in beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., to the melon thrips Thrips palmi Karny was studied under field conditions at two sites in Colombia. Genotypes were rated for resistance on the basis of visual damage scores, bean production ratings (a visual estimate of pod and seed set), and grain yields.
