Article Synopsis
  • - Racial and ethnic disparities in maternal mortality rates in the U.S. highlight the urgent need for improved maternity care quality and safety for all women, particularly in the southeastern region.
  • - This project aims to test the effectiveness of pre-conception counseling with father involvement in community settings, focusing on enhancing cardiovascular health outcomes before and during pregnancy.
  • - The study involves assessing community needs, conducting a pilot program, and evaluating the implementation of counseling to identify and address barriers, with the goal of creating sustainable public health strategies to reduce maternal health issues.

Introduction: Racial/ethnic disparities in maternal mortality rates represent one of the most significant areas of disparities amongst all conventional population perinatal health measures in the U.S. The alarming trends and persistent disparities of outcomes by race/ethnicity and geographic location reinforce the need to focus on ensuring quality and safety of maternity care for all women.

Objectives: Doulas are a potential resource for addressing substance use and mental health challenges that pregnant and postpartum individuals experience. We sought to review peer-reviewed literature that examines Doulas' role in addressing these challenges to highlight the need for more research in this area.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review (2001-2021) to identify articles that examine the way in which Doulas address maternal substance use and mental health challenges in their clients.

Introduction: Maternal illness and death are largely preventable; however, the field of preconception health needs further study. Geographic region and rurality play a large role in maternal health, and an understanding of the effect of these 2 factors at the individual level could prevent future adverse maternal health outcomes.

Methods: We developed an abbreviated index of preconception health risk (diabetes, hypertension, body weight, mental health, unintended pregnancy, HIV, alcohol and nicotine use, nutrition, physical activity, receipt of the influenza vaccine) by using data from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

Background: There is a high demand for managing skin disease, and dermatologists are in short supply.

Objectives: To better understand how rashes and other specific skin conditions are co-managed by primary care providers (PCPs) and dermatologists, we estimated the frequency with which PCPs sought consultation with or referral to dermatology and the proportion of patients who had a follow-up dermatology office visit in the following 90 days.

Design And Setting: The retrospective longitudinal study included 106,459 patients with a skin condition diagnosed by 3,830 PCPs, from January 2017 to March 2017.

Introduction: For patients with a rash, the effect of teledermatology workflow on utilization has not been defined. We compared utilization across four teledermatology workflows in patients with a rash.

Methods: The observational longitudinal cohort study included 28,857 Kaiser Permanente Northern California members with a new rash diagnosis seen in primary care and with dermatology advice obtained using teledermatology.

Background: The effectiveness and value of teledermatology and face-to-face workflows for diagnosing lesions are not adequately understood.

Objective: We compared the risks of biopsy and cancer diagnosis among 2 face-to-face workflows (direct referral and roving dermatologist) and 4 teledermatology workflows.

Methods: Retrospective study of 59,279 primary care patients presenting with a lesion from January through June 2017.

Background: Apolipoprotein A-IV (ApoA-IV) is a 46 kD glycoprotein thought to protect against atherosclerosis. It is synthesized primarily in epithelial cells of the small intestine. Elevated plasma concentrations of ApoA-IV in patients with chronic kidney disease suggest that the human kidney is involved in ApoA-IV metabolism.

Haglund recently proposed a combinatorial interpretation of the modified Macdonald polynomials H(mu). We give a combinatorial proof of this conjecture, which establishes the existence and integrality of H(mu). As corollaries, we obtain the cocharge formula of Lascoux and Schutzenberger for Hall-Littlewood polynomials, a formula of Sahi and Knop for Jack's symmetric functions, a generalization of this result to the integral Macdonald polynomials J(mu), a formula for H(mu) in terms of Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon polynomials, and combinatorial expressions for the Kostka-Macdonald coefficients K(lambda,mu) when mu is a two-column shape.

Recent studies showed lower apolipoprotein A-IV (apoA-IV) plasma concentrations in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The actual distribution of the antiatherogenic apoA-IV in human plasma, however, is discussed controversially and it was never investigated in CAD patients. We therefore developed a gentle technique to separate the various apoA-IV-containing plasma fractions.

We report the results in seven patients treated surgically for nonunion of the olecranon. Four nonunions occurred after primary treatment with tension band wiring and three nonunions occurred after open reduction internal fixation with plates and screws or lag screws only. All patients were treated with cancellous bone grafting and open reduction internal fixation using anatomical hook plates.

We define doubly graded Sn modules Rmu for which we conjecture that the multiplicities of irreducible representations in various bi-degrees are given by the Macdonald coefficients Klambdamu. Assuming one fundamental conjecture, the modules Rmu can be given several equivalent definitions, which we discuss. We prove the conjectures in various special cases.

Exposure of isolated dispersed pancreatic acini to increasing concentrations of ethanol (5 to 500 mM) or acetaldehyde (0.5 to 100 mM) produced a progressive inhibition of [3H]leucine incorporation into both "cellular" (those remaining in the cell) and "secretory" (those released into the medium) proteins. Whereas 500 mM ethanol caused 90-95% inhibition in the synthesis of "cellular" and "secretory" proteins, the concentration of acetaldehyde needed to produce a similar inhibition was found to be 50 mM.
