Background: Syringe services programs (SSP) are evidence-based venues offering harm reduction services to persons who inject drugs (PWID), such as sterile syringes, STI/HIV testing, and linkage to care to decrease drug use-related morbidities and mortalities. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked with reduced resilience, while increased resilience can help PWID attend SSPs. This study examined the potential mediating role of resilience between ACEs and SSP attendance among PWID.

Potato is cultivated all the year round in Pakistan. However, the major crop is the autumn crop which is planted in mid-October and contributes 80-85% of the total production. The abrupt climate change has affected the weather patterns all over the world, resulting in the reduction of the mean air temperature in autumn by almost 1.

Background Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial, particularly in women of reproductive age presenting with acute abdominal pain. This audit aimed to assess the completeness and accuracy of gynecological history documentation, including pregnancy status, in female patients admitted for emergency surgery due to abdominal pain.

Background: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the appendix are typically detected incidentally during appendectomy. Recent studies reported no metachronous metastases among patients with primary tumors <2 cm, regardless of lymph node status or referral for completion hemicolectomy. However, questions persist regarding the possibility of metastases developing decades after surgical resection, particularly because appendiceal NETs are frequently diagnosed in young adults and children.

Objective: Traumatic spinal injury (TSI) involves diverse etiologies, posing different risks among patient populations worldwide. Discrepancies in TSI treatment and outcomes between high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries highlight the critical necessity for tailored management approaches for this global challenge. This study delves into the presentation, management, and outcomes of TSI in Africa.

Background: Postpartum family planning (PPFP) is an essential component of birth care that helps avert maternal and newborn health hazards by preventing short-spaced births. Many Asian and African studies found PPFP counselling during antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) effective in increasing PPFP uptake. Studies in Bangladesh, however, provided limited evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating PPFP in maternal health services.

Background: The high maternal mortality ratio in South Asian countries could be attributed to poor maternal healthcare (MHC) utilization. Here household heads (HHs) are the main decision-makers of the households and thus can be key stakeholders in women's MHC uptake. We aim to investigate the role of HHs' education in MHC utilization and explore the educational status of male adolescents who will eventually replace today's HHs in the future.

Objective: Sport-related concussion (SRC) affects cognitive and oculomotor function. We evaluated recovery from SRC in athletes with cognitive symptoms and/or oculomotor impairments who were prescribed early aerobic exercise treatment.

Design: Secondary exploratory analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: To compare clinical characteristics in patients with concussions sustained by prevalent, but understudied, mechanisms (work-related concussion [WRC] and motor vehicle collision [MVC]-related concussion) to sport-related concussion (SRC).

Methods: Retrospective review of 281 electronic medical records from an outpatient concussion clinic. Time since injury (days), duration of care (days), amount of care (number of visits), and perceived health (Short-Form 12) were collected.

Background/objective: Assessing Orthostatic Intolerance (OI, symptoms upon standing from supine) is recommended in athletes with sport-related concussions (SRCs), as this is caused by impairments in the cardiovascular autonomic nervous system (cANS). Early Exercise Intolerance (Early EI, symptoms on light physical exertion) is also due to impairments in the cANS but is difficult to incorporate into outpatient clinical practice (cost of personnel, time, equipment). The purpose of this study was to determine if we could use OI to screen for Early EI, as well as understand differences between adolescents who do and do not report OI.

Particle-based systems have immense potential for combining thermal energy storage (TES) with renewable energy sources. The so-called sandTES system, which is an active TES system, utilizes sand or other small particles as a storage material and consists of a hot tank, a cold tank, and a reversible fluidized bed heat exchanger. In the preferred design, the tubes are arranged in horizontal serpentine tube bundles; thus, the headers are positioned vertically, for one phase subcritical, two-phase and supercritical water/steam conditions.

Background: Cement fixation for total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains a controversial topic. While cemented stems are associated with lower risk of periprosthetic fractures (PPF), cementless stems may offer superior biological fixation. This study analyzed peri-operative and short-term outcomes of cemented vs.

Article Synopsis
  • High temperatures decrease anthocyanin levels in grapes, and this study identifies VvMYB44-1 as a key repressor of anthocyanin biosynthesis that is activated by heat treatment.
  • Overexpressing VvMYB44-1 reduces anthocyanin production by downregulating genes responsible for its synthesis and inhibiting the formation of a complex that normally promotes anthocyanin accumulation.
  • VvMYB44-1 also influences cytokinin levels by regulating associated genes, and its effect on anthocyanin biosynthesis is dependent on a specific EAR motif.

Background: Periprosthetic femur fractures (PFF) are a rare early complication in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) that may result in revision and burden the healthcare system. A previous study identified a PFF rate of 8.3 % at 90 days with the modified anterolateral Watson-Jones (AL) approach to THA.

In research and engineering, short laser pulses are fundamental for metrology and communication. The generation of pulses by passive mode-locking is especially desirable due to the compact setup dimensions, without the need for active modulation requiring dedicated external circuitry. However, well-established models do not cover regular self-pulsing in gain media that recover faster than the cavity round trip time.

  • Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) combined with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) can significantly reduce the risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) compared to DAPT alone.
  • A meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials involving 6708 patients showed a marked decrease in UGIB rates and all-cause mortality when PPI was added, with no negative impact on major cardiovascular events.
  • Specifically, the PPI + DAPT group had a risk ratio of 0.39 for UGIB and 0.46 for mortality, indicating substantial benefits from this combination treatment.

Alkaline phosphatases (ALPs) play crucial role in various functions of human body, such as bone formation, metabolism in liver and intestines, and transfer of nutrients from mother to fetus during pregnancy. However, their overexpression is associated with severe consequences in different patients, such as deposition of minerals in dialysis patients also called coronary calcification and increased bone turnover in patients facing cancer metastization. Due to their involvement in crucial functions of human body and association with such harsh consequences, there is need of newer efficient ALP inhibitors that can tackle ALP excess without derailing the progress of normal functions.
