Improper treatment of livestock and poultry wastewater (LPWW) rich in ammonium nitrogen (NH-N) and antibiotics leads to eutrophication, and contributes to the risk of creating drug-resistant pathogens. The design-build-test-learn strategy was used to engineer a continuous process using Chlorella vulgaris to remove NH-N and antibiotics. The optimized system removed NH-N at a rate of 306 mg/L/d, degraded 99 % of lincomycin, and reduced the hydraulic retention time to 4 days.

Accumulating evidence indicates that maternal exposure to carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs) during gestation can induce multiple system abnormalities in offspring, whereas its potential mechanism in respiratory disease is still largely unknown. In order to explore the effect of maternal exposure to CBNPs on offspring's lung and latent pathogenesis, we respectively established in vivo model of pregnant rats exposed to CBNPs and ex vivo model of lung epithelial cells treated with pups' serum of pregnant rats exposed to CBNPs. After maternal exposure to CBNPs, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and fibrosis levels increased as a result of DDRGK1-mediated reticulophagy upregulated in offspring's lung.

Coastal waters are receiving increasing loads of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), differing in structural complexity and molecular weights with potential different effects on the phosphorus (P) dynamics in these waters. This study conducted an in-situ investigation in Xiangshan Harbor, China, to explore the patterns of P release in response to DOC inputs. To further elucidate the underlying mechanisms behind the DOC-affected sediment P release, a two-month mesocosm experiment was undertaken with coastal sediment (Xiangshan Harbor) to which acetate, glucose, and humic acid (representing the fermentation product, the simple available carbon, and the refractory humic-like carbon sources, respectively) were separately added to the overlying water at dosages of 0, 5, 10, and 20 mg C L.

Lupeol is a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid with a wide range of biological activities. To improve the water solubility and targeting of lupeol, in the following study, we synthesized 27 lupeol derivatives in the first series by introducing lipophilic cations with lupeol as the lead compound. Through the screening of different cancer cells, we found that some of the derivatives showed better activity than cisplatin against human non-small cell lung cancer A549 cells, among which compound 6c was found to have an IC value of 1.
