The establishment of core indicators for assessment plays an important role in carrying out the lifecycle value assessment of Chinese patent medicine, which are developed based on the concepts such as clinical value oriented, paying attention to the human use experience, and whole process quality control. To this end, the Specialty Committee of Data Monitoring and Decision Making of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies organized experts to draft the Expert Consensus on Core Indicators for Lifecycle Value Assessment of Chinese Patent Medicine based on the research including Chinese Medicine Registration Review Evidence System in Combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory, Human Use Experience, and Clinical Trials(GZY-FJS-2022-206) by National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This consensus proposed 92 core indicators from four stages, including new drug R&D project approval, pre-clinical research, new drug marketing authorization, and post-marketing, combining the assessment purposes and needs of different stakeholders from different dimensions such as clinical needs, clinical positioning, human use experience, effectiveness, safety, quality control, innovation, accessibility, and suitability.

Article Synopsis
  • A study involving 920 patients with stable angina tested the efficacy of Danhong injection (DHI), a polypharmacological drug, over 14 days, finding that DHI significantly improved patient-reported angina frequency compared to a placebo.
  • There were no significant differences in major vascular events or serious side effects between the DHI and placebo groups, indicating DHI's safety in this population.
  • RNA sequencing identified a new therapeutic module related to blood coagulation and cholesterol metabolism as a potential target for DHI's effects, highlighting a connection between this module and positive changes in angina symptoms.

Although there is guidance from different regulatory agencies, there are opportunities to bring greater consistency and stronger applicability to address the practical issues of establishing and operating a data monitoring committee (DMC) for clinical studies of Chinese medicine. We names it as a Chinese Medicine Data Monitoring Committee (CMDMC). A panel composed of clinical and statistical experts shared their experience and thoughts on the important aspects of CMDMCs.

Through the multi-dimensional mining and analysis of launched anti-influenza proprietary Chinese medicines, this paper explores the study of the prescriptions and pharmacodynamics of traditional Chinese medicines for influenza. We established a standardized database by collecting and excavating the launched Chinese patent medicines that clearly describe the treatment of influenza. Frequency analysis and association rules were used to analyze the frequency of Chinese patent medicines for the treatment of influenza in the aspects of dosage form, category and prescription drugs.

Using a system pharmacology strategy, this study evaluated the unique pharmacological characteristics of three different neuroprotective compounds for the treatment of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion. A microarray including 374 brain ischemia-related genes was used to identify the differentially expressed genes among five treatment groups: baicalin, jasminoidin, ursodeoxycholic acid, sham, and vehicle, and MetaCore analysis software was applied to identify the significantly altered pathways, processes and interaction network parameters. At pathway level, 46, 25, and 31 pathways were activated in the baicalin, jasminoidin, and ursodeoxycholic acid groups, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the combined effects of ursodeoxycholic acid (UA) and jasminoidin (JA) on reducing brain damage in mice with cerebral ischemia, confirming that their combination (JU) is more effective than either drug alone.
  • Researchers analyzed the resulting changes in the brain's gene expression and identified several biological pathways that are activated by the treatment, focusing on inflammation, immune response, apoptosis, and nervous system development.
  • The findings highlight that the collaboration between UA and JA reveals new understanding of treatment mechanisms for cerebral ischemia, paving the way for potential therapeutic advancements.

Rg1 and Rb1 are two major active compounds of ginseng that facilitate learning and memory. The present study aimed to compare the nootropic effects of Rg1 and Rb1 in a scopolamine induced dementia mice model. After 6 and 12 mg/kg of Rg1 and Rb1 intraperitoneal administration to mice for 7 days, their effects were assessed using the step-down passive avoidance (SD) and the Morris water maze (MWM) tests, the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, acetylcholine (ACh) content and serotonin (5-HT) level in the hippocampus were analysed after SD and MWM tests.
