Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the interaction of chiral Majorana fermions (MFs) with either two parallel Majorana zero modes (MZMs) or two parallel quantum dots (QDs), finding that their resonant exchange behaves similarly in both cases.
  • A proposed circuit using a topological superconductor, achieved by coupling a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with a s-wave superconductor, aims to observe the resonant exchange of chiral MF pairs.
  • Key findings indicate that the resonant transmission of chiral MFs can be finely tuned by adjusting coupling parameters, potentially enabling non-Abelian braiding operations, which could be significant for developing topological quantum computers.

Recycling resources from wastewater is even more important for developing a more sustainable society. Disposing sewage sludge, which accumulates most pollutants and resources in sewage, is the main challenge in wastewater pollution control and resource utilization. Heavy metals (HMs) are the greatest constraint limiting the application of sewage sludge to land as a sustainable use of this material.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with excellent photocatalytic properties and unique piezoelectric response have attracted great attention. However, these characters are rare for traditional 2D structures. With an intrinsic electric field, the Janus 2D materials show great promise in photocatalytic and out-of-plane piezoelectric applications.

The van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) has attracted widespread attention as a unique structure for future electronic and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we constructed the ZnO-SeMoS and ZnO-SMoSe vdWHs and systematically investigated their electronic structures and band alignments considering vertical strain and external electric field effects. It is found that the ZnO-SeMoS and ZnO-SMoSe vdWHs both exhibit type-II band alignment with indirect band gaps of 1.

Three novel dimeric bithiophenes, echinbithiophenedimers A-C (), along with two known thiophenes, and , were obtained from , and their structures were identified through extensive spectroscopic analysis and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compounds possessed new carbon skeletons; they are dimeric bithiophenes with and featuring an unprecedented 1,3-dioxolane ring system and featuring an unusual 1,4-dioxane ring. These compounds are the first examples of bithiophene dimers furnished by different cyclic diethers.

Germinating seeds can release diverse phytochemicals that repel, inhibit, or kill pathogens such as root-knot nematodes and seed-borne fungi. However, little is known about the composition of these phytochemicals and their effects on pathogens. In this study, we demonstrated that tomato seed exudates can attract the nematode using a dual-choice assay.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Xi'an, China, investigated the prevalence and risk factors of nocturnal enuresis (NE) in children aged 5-12, finding that 3.99% of the 6,568 children studied had NE, with higher rates in younger children.
  • The results indicated that NE prevalence decreased with age but increased with longer use of disposable diapers, lack of toilet training, and consumption of sugary drinks.
  • Key risk factors for NE included family history of the condition, being male, sleep disorders, and poor hydration, emphasizing the importance of parental support and timely medical intervention for affected children.*

Article Synopsis
  • - The study used high-throughput sequencing to analyze how different plants (Lolium perenne, Trifolium repens, Vulpia myuros, and Vicia villosa) affect the soil microbial community in apple orchards compared to naturally growing grass.
  • - Results indicated that each plant type increased the abundance of certain beneficial microorganisms, while naturally growing grass led to a rise in pathogenic bacteria like Ralstonia.
  • - Correlation analysis found significant relationships between microbial abundance and soil properties, suggesting that planting Vicia villosa can enhance soil health by improving organic matter and nutrients in apple orchards.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a non-specific diagnostic marker of inflammation and an evolutionarily conserved protein with roles in innate immune signaling. Natural CRP is composed of five identical globular subunits that form a pentamer, but the role of pentameric CRP (pCRP) during inflammatory pathogenesis remains controversial. Emerging evidence suggests that pCRP can be dissociated into monomeric CRP (mCRP) that has major roles in host defenses and inflammation.

is an important fungal pathogen that causes apple ring rot, which can significantly reduce apple yield. Fungicide applications are the main control measure of apple ring rot worldwide. Pyraclostrobin is a quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide that has yet to be registered for control of in China.

Background: Life expectancy is a statistical measure of the average time an organism is expected to live. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of injury-related mortality on life expectancy in Zhejiang Province.

Methods: Our study used standard life tables to calculate life expectancy and cause-removed life expectancy based on mortality data from the Zhejiang Chronic Disease Surveillance System.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the links between sleep duration, snoring, and diabetes among different gender and menopausal status groups in rural China.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 57,000 participants aged 30-79 using logistic regression to determine the odds of diabetes based on sleep patterns and snoring.
  • Results indicated a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and diabetes risk in postmenopausal women, while snoring was associated with diabetes across all groups, impacted by factors like socioeconomic status and health behaviors.*

Evidence indicates that breakfast consumption is associated with a cluster of health-related behaviors, yet studies in mainland China are scarce. This study is conducted to describe the frequency of breakfast consumption among Chinese adolescents and examine its associations with other dietary, physical activity, sedentary, sleep, cigarette-smoking, and alcohol-drinking behaviors. Breakfast consumption and other health-related behaviors data was collected via a self-administered questionnaire in a cross-sectional study in Zhejiang Province, China.

Evidence indicates an increased cancer risk among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, yet studies in mainland China are scarce. Based on Diabetes Surveillance System linking to Cancer Surveillance System of Zhejiang Province in China, we explored the cancer risk among T2DM patients. Totally, 327,268 T2DM patients were identified and followed from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2013.

As angiogenesis and vasculogenesis involve the complex network structures of various types of cells, extracellular matrix components, and cytokines, it is still difficult to exactly mimic the microenvironment of vascularization in vivo. In our study, we constructed a complex containing highly proliferative fibroblasts that can secrete extracellular matrix components and growth factors to chemotaxize endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in an attempt to create an ideal microenvironment for quick vascularization. Amniotic membrane microparticles (mAM) rich in type IV collagen (COL IV) and laminin (LN) were prepared, and human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) were infected with lentivirus (LV) of overexpression of SDF-1α to construct SDF-1α(ov)HDF.

Central (visceral) obesity is more closely associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease than is peripheral [subcutaneous (sc)] obesity, but the underlying mechanism for this pathophysiological difference is largely unknown. To understand the molecular basis of this difference, we sequenced 10,437 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from a human omental fat cDNA library and discovered a novel visceral fat depot-specific secretory protein, which we have named omentin. Omentin ESTs were more abundant than many known adipose genes, such as perilipin, adiponectin, and leptin in the cDNA library.

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) has been proposed to mediate the growth inhibitory effects of transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta in breast and prostate cancer cells. Both TGF-beta and exogenous IGFBP-3 inhibit DNA synthesis in Mv1 mink lung epithelial cells (CCL64). The present study asks whether IGFBPs synthesized by CCL64 cells mediate growth inhibition by TGF-beta.
