- Hot chili pepper production is increasing in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, to meet export demands, but is facing challenges from a disease called pepper yellow leaf curl disease (YLCD) caused by a specific virus.
- A limited survey in 2023 across chili fields in Laos and Vietnam identified eight plants showing YLCD symptoms, prompting further analysis of symptomatic samples from these regions.
- DNA extraction and PCR testing confirmed the presence of the PepYLCThV virus in the affected plants, with sequencing revealing high genetic similarities between the virus isolates from Laos and Vietnam and a known PepYLCThV strain from Thailand.
