Microscale Spatial Dysbiosis in Oral biofilms Associated with Disease.

Microbiome dysbiosis has largely been defined using compositional analysis of metagenomic sequencing data; however, differences in the spatial arrangement of bacteria between healthy and diseased microbiomes remain largely unexplored. In this study, we measured the spatial arrangement of bacteria in dental implant biofilms from patients with healthy implants, peri-implant mucositis, or peri-implantitis, an oral microbiome-associated inflammatory disease. We discovered that peri-implant biofilms from patients with mild forms of the disease were characterized by large single-genus patches of bacteria, while biofilms from healthy sites were more complex, mixed structures.

This study aimed to explore the possibility of exogenous ethanol treatment as a technology to regulate the growth and the synthesis of secondary metabolites in herbaceous plants. After transplantation, sweet basil, Korean mint, and sweet wormwood were cultivated in a controlled vertical farming system and consistently exposed to exogenous ethanol at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 mM.

Multidisciplinary Shared Decision Making for Fertility Preservation in Young Women With Breast Cancer.

Purpose: Fertility preservation (FP) is an important issue for young survivors of breast cancer. Although international guidelines recommend pre-treatment fertility counseling for women with breast cancer, there is no standardized protocol or referral system for FP in South Korea. There are also barriers to discussing FP that make patient-centered decision making difficult.

Protection of the Vascular System by Polyethylene Glycol Reduces Secondary Injury Following Spinal Cord Injury in Rats.

Background: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a hydrophilic polymer, which has been known to have a neuroprotective effect by sealing the ruptured cell membrane, but PEG effects on the vascular systems and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we showed the neuroprotective effect of PEG by preventing damage to the vascular system.

To identify und support particular target groups for mental health prevention, we explore the links between shame and help-seeking intentions concerning mental health in different lifestyles (based on socioeconomic status as well as health-related behaviors). Lifestyles were operationalized by nine confirmatory, homogenous clusters of the sample. These clusters are based on individuals' similarities in sociodemographic aspects and health behavior.

Longitudinal Internal Validity of the Quality of Life after Brain Injury: Response Shift and Responsiveness.

The Quality of Life after Brain Injury (QoLIBRI) questionnaire was developed and validated to assess disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in individuals after TBI. The present study aims to determine its longitudinal validity by assessing its responsiveness and response shift from 3 to 6 months post-injury. Analyses were based on data from the European longitudinal observational cohort Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury study.

Impact of Sociodemographic, Premorbid, and Injury-Related Factors on Patient-Reported Outcome Trajectories after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. To better understand its impact on various outcome domains, this study pursues the following: (1) longitudinal outcome assessments at three, six, and twelve months post-injury; (2) an evaluation of sociodemographic, premorbid, and injury-related factors, and functional recovery contributing to worsening or improving outcomes after TBI. Using patient-reported outcome measures, recuperation trends after TBI were identified by applying Multivariate Latent Class Mixed Models (MLCMM).

Site-Specific Glycan Microheterogeneity Evaluation of Aflibercept Fusion Protein by Glycopeptide-Based LC-MSMS Mapping.

The evaluation of the protein glycosylation states of samples of aflibercept obtained from three different regions was conducted by site-specific N-linked glycan microheterogeneity profiling. Glycopeptide-based nano-LC MSMS mapping of tryptic-digested samples of each aflibercept lot provided site-specific information about glycan microheterogeneity on each of the five N-glycosylation sites (two sites in the VEGFR-1 region, two sites in the VEGFR-2 region, and one site in the human IgG Fc region). Next, the glycopeptide-mapping results obtained from the three different aflibercept lots were compared to evaluate the similarity between the samples.

Huntington's disease phenotypes are improved via mTORC1 modulation by small molecule therapy.

Huntington's Disease (HD) is a dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disease for which the major causes of mortality are neurodegeneration-associated aspiration pneumonia followed by cardiac failure. mTORC1 pathway perturbations are present in HD models and human tissues. Amelioration of mTORC1 deficits by genetic modulation improves disease phenotypes in HD models, is not a viable therapeutic strategy.

Effects of Forest Healing Anti-Aging Program on Psychological, Physiological, and Physical Health of Older People with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

This study aimed to determine the effect of a forest healing anti-aging program on psychological, physiological, and physical health in older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Twenty-two older people with MCI living in the city participated in a forest healing anti-aging program. Psychological indicators included the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Beck depression inventory (BDI), profile of mood states (POMS), World Health Organization Quality of Life instrument (WHOQOL), and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI).

Stretchable PPG sensor with light polarization for physical activity-permissible monitoring.

Skin-attachable sensors, which represent the ultimate form of wearable electronic devices that ensure conformal contact with skin, suffer from motion artifact limitations owing to relative changes in position between the sensor and skin during physical activities. In this study, a polarization-selective structure of a skin-conformable photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensor was developed to decrease the amount of scattered light from the epidermis, which is the main cause of motion artifacts. The motion artifacts were suppressed more than 10-fold in comparison with those of rigid sensors.

Quality of life and mental health in emerging adults with cerebral palsy compared to the general population.

Background: While evidence concerning Quality of Life (QoL) in youth with cerebral palsy (CP) in comparison to the general population has been accumulating, there is a lack of studies exploring differences on a wider range of positive and negative mental health outcomes in emerging adults.

Methods: This binational case control study is part of the SPARCLE cohort study on QoL and participation of youth with CP. QoL (WHOQOL-BREF), depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7) and self-efficacy (GSE) were assessed in 198 emerging adults with CP and 593 emerging adults from the general population, matched for country of residence, age and gender.

The effects of electrotherapy with task-oriented training on upper limb function in subacute stroke patients are unclear. This study investigated the influence of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) with task-oriented training on spasticity, hand function, upper limb function, and activities of daily living in patients with subacute stroke. Forty-eight patients with subacute stroke were randomly assigned to either the TENS group (n = 22) or the placebo-TENS group (n = 21).
