Activities of daily living (ADL) and state of incontinence in 2,567 elderly community residents aged 65 years and over, living in Koganei City (a suburb of Tokyo) were longitudinally investigated through two mail surveys at the beginning and end of a five-year period. At the entry, only 6% of total subjects were classified as low ADL, 3% as incontinent. 30% of the low ADL were classified as incontinent.

Falls can be considered a vital factor in impeding successful aging in the elderly. The purpose of the study is to know rates of falls per year among the elderly, to observe the situations when falls occurred, and to clarify the association of falls with physical deterioration. The survey was carried out in 1406 residents aged 65 and over of the Tokyo Metropolitan Home for the Elderly in 1982.

Aztreonam (AZT), a monobactam antibiotic, is known to have a high activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Fundamental and clinical studies were carried out on AZT with the following results. Following 1 g of bolus intravenous injection, the transfer of AZT to uterine artery and internal genital organs was found to be satisfactory.

The human tumor clonogenic assay (HTCA) and the human tumor xenograft system implanted in nude mice were performed simultaneously in an ovarian cancer patient as chemosensitivity testing. Eight anticancer drugs (5-FU, MMC, VCR, ACD, BLM, VLB, CDDP, and ADM) were applied to the HTCA and the human tumor xenograft system. In the HTCA, 5-FU and MMC were sensitive, VCR was moderately sensitive, and ACD, BLM, VLB, CDDP, and ADM were resistant.

Induction of acute Heyman nephritis in rats gave a significant increase in the urinary excretion of protein (p less than 0.001) and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG; p less than 0.01) 14 days after injection of antibody.

Highly sensitive techniques have been used for the assay of a range of marker enzymes including lactase, sucrase, alkaline phosphatase, leucyl-beta-naphthylamidase (brush border), and 5'-nucleotidase (basolateral membrane) in jejunal biopsy homogenates from patients with adult coeliac disease with and without steatorrhoea and from a control group. The absorption of D-xylose and vitamin B12 was compared in the two groups with coeliac disease. All enzymes assayed were equally depressed in both groups of coeliac disease as compared with the controls.

This report concerns a group of schizophrenics whose visual evoked potential reduced in amplitude most markedly in A5 (averaged potential evoked by 1 Hz flashes which started 5 min after the addition test for 15 min). These patients in general had poor productive symptoms and progressed very slowly. Most of them were simple schizophrenics.

A 500 mg intramuscular dose of carbenicillin produced peak levels averaging 147 microgram/ml after three hours in the first day full-term newborn infants, and 172 microgram/ml after one to two hours in infants five days of age. The fall of blood levels thereafter was delayed and serum half-life averaged 4.2 and 2.

An assay for cyclic AMP is described which takes advantage of the high affinity of the dissociated receptor moiety of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase I for the nucleotide. The kinase is kept dissociated by salt (800 mM-NaCl/30mM-EDTA). In the presence of a simply prepared heat-stable protein fraction the binding reagent is stable for the time needed to reach equilibrium of binding.

Inorganic salts, several proteins and traces of protein precipitants were tested to find out by what mechanisms they modulate the binding of cyclic [3H]AMP to protein kinase (ATP-protein phosphotransferase; EC 2.7.1.
