Axillary lymph nodes metastasis in a patient with recurrent papillary thyroid cancer: a case report.

Introduction: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy; the most common type of thyroid cancer is papillary thyroid cancer which accounts for approximately 90% of all thyroid cancers. Previously defined prognostic factors of papillary thyroid cancer include age, gender, tumor size, extrathyroidal extension, and distant metastasis. Cervical lymph node metastases are very common in patients with papillary thyroid cancer.

Juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus: onset patterns and short-term outcome in Egyptian children, a single-center experience.

Objective: The objective of this article is to define disease onset pattern and understand the response to therapy in children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Egypt.

Methods: A prospective cohort of 41 Egyptian children diagnosed with SLE was analyzed. SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) score was used to record disease activity at onset, and renal biopsy was performed to define the stage of lupus nephritis.

The new Aquatic Laser Fluorescence Analyzer (ALFA) provides spectral and temporal measurements of laser-stimulated emission (LSE) for assessment of phytoplankton pigments, community structure, photochemical efficiency (PY), and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The instrument was deployed in the Northern Gulf of Mexico to evaluate the ALFA analytical capabilities across the estuarine-marine gradient. The robust relationships between the pigment fluorescence and independent pigment measurements were used to validate the ALFA analytical algorithms and calibrate the instrument.

Methods: One hundred and forty two cases of hypopharyngeal carcinoma were included and operated on by either partial pharyngectomy, total pharyngectomy or esophagectomy. The reconstructive method was tailored according to the resected segment.

This work describes an automated opto-fluidic system for parallel non-contact manipulation of microcomponents. The strong dynamics of laser-driven thermocapillary flows were used to drag microcomponents at high speeds. High-speed flows allowed to manipulate micro-objects in a parallel manner only using a single laser and a mirror scanner.

The role of anti-Mullerian and inhibin B hormones in the evaluation of 46,XY disorders of sex development.

Objective: To assess the sensitivity and specificity of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and inhibin B for diagnosis of 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD).

Patients And Methods: The study included 43 patients of 46,XY DSD and compared them with 43 healthy, male, age matched controls. All patients underwent karyotyping, assessment of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and Δ4-androstendione (Δ4A) basal and after human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) testing.

Role of computed tomography angiography in the diagnosis of vascular stenosis in head and neck microvascular free flap reconstruction.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of computed tomography angiography (CTA) in the diagnosis of vascular stenosis at the vascular pedicle of head and neck microvascular free flaps. A prospective study was done of 65 consecutive patients (49 male, 16 female; mean age 55 years) who had undergone head and neck microvascular free flap reconstruction. All patients underwent 64-slice CTA of the carotid artery.

A curved ultrasonic actuator optimized for spherical motors: design and experiments.

Multi-degree-of-freedom angular actuators are commonly used in numerous mechatronic areas such as omnidirectional robots, robot articulations or inertially stabilized platforms. The conventional method to design these devices consists in placing multiple actuators in parallel or series using gimbals which are bulky and difficult to miniaturize. Motors using a spherical rotor are interesting for miniature multidegree-of-freedom actuators.

Gluteal Compartment Syndrome following Vascular and Neurological Injuries.

Gluteal compartment syndrome is a serious but rare condition that has recently been increasingly reported in literature. This report presents two cases that followed neurological and vascular injuries (first case: an injury of the superior gluteal artery; second case: neurological injury bilaterally). A high index of suspicion and attention is needed to early diagnose this condition due to the possibility of developing serious and potentially fatal complications and difficulty in management.

Bacterial group I introns: mobile RNA catalysts.

Group I introns are intervening sequences that have invaded tRNA, rRNA and protein coding genes in bacteria and their phages. The ability of group I introns to self-splice from their host transcripts, by acting as ribozymes, potentially renders their insertion into genes phenotypically neutral. Some group I introns are mobile genetic elements due to encoded homing endonuclease genes that function in DNA-based mobility pathways to promote spread to intronless alleles.
