Background: Infectious mononucleosis after primary infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV-IM) has been linked to the development of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue-syndrome (ME/CFS) in children, adolescents, and young adults. Here, we present clinical phenotypes and follow-up data from a first German cohort of young people with ME/CFS following EBV-IM.

Due to the specificity of stress intolerance with postexertional malaise (PEM) in patients with postviral syndromes, physical as well as psychological overload must be urgently avoided in these cases; however, these aspects can only be insufficiently considered in current medical pain therapy concepts.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to quantify secondary prevention care by creating a secondary prevention benchmark (2PBM) score for patients undergoing ambulatory cardiac rehabilitation (CR) after acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Methods: In this observational cohort study, 472 consecutive ACS patients who completed the ambulatory CR program between 2017 and 2019 were included. Benchmarks for secondary prevention medication and clinical and lifestyle targets were predefined and combined in the comprehensive 2PBM score with maximum 10 points.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective tool for treatment-resistant depression, though it is still unclear which brain area to target in order to get robust results. While research suggests that the nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays an important role in depression, studies using NAc DBS to improve depressive behavior have not been able to fully explain underlying molecular mechanisms. CX3CL1 (fractalkine) is a unique member of the CX3C chemokine family and mediates both adhesion and cell migration in inflammatory processes. In the pathogenesis of tauopathies, genetic and environmental factors have been identified. While familial clustering led to the identification of mutations in MAPT encoding the microtubule-associated protein tau, the high incidence of a sporadic tauopathy endemic in Guadeloupe was linked to the plant-derived mitochondrial complex I inhibitor annonacin. The interaction of both factors was studied in the present work in a realistic paradigm over a period of 12 months.

Inflammation is an integral part of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most prevalent form of hepatic pathology found in the general population. In this context, recently we have examined the potential role of Glutaminyl Cyclases (QC and isoQC), and their inhibitors, in the maturation of chemokines, for example, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1, CCL2), to generate their bioactive conformation. Catalysis by isoQC leads to the formation of an N-terminal pyroglutamate residue protecting CCL2 against degradation by aminopeptidases.
